Professor Jun Won Eom's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal oncology and rare abdominal tumors, with a focus on colorectal cancer management, surgical outcomes, and the molecular mechanisms of anticancer agents like metformin. The lab investigates clinical decision-making in rectal cancer, including the timing of chemoradiotherapy, and explores the pathogenesis and treatment of rare tumors such as inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors and primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenomas. Their work integrates clinical oncology with translational research, utilizing high-throughput data and patient-derived data to uncover novel therapeutic targets and improve treatment strategies.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the stomach in adults is extremely rare, with unpredictable prognosis. We present a 55-year-old woman with a gastric IMT. She experienced sudden abdominal pain 4 d previously. Physical examination showed mild abdominal tenderness in the hypogastrium, but no palpable abnormal abdominal mass. Metformin, a first-line drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, has also been shown to have anticancer effects against a variety of malignancies, including colorectal cancer. Although inhibition of the mTOR pathway is known to be the most important mechanism for the antitumor effects of metformin, other mechanisms remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to identify the antitumor mechanism of metformin in colorectal cancer using high-throughput data, and then test the mechanism experimentally.
We report two cases of deep tracheal laceration in female patients after balloon dilation for benign tracheobronchial stenosis.
