Professor Jung Ho Kang's research lab focuses on advanced materials and systems for energy conversion and biomedical safety, with a strong emphasis on fuel cell technology and toxicological impacts of industrial chemicals. The lab investigates critical phenomena such as electrode flooding and water management in polymer electrolyte fuel cells, aiming to optimize performance through multi-scale modeling of porous transport layers. In parallel, the lab conducts clinical and translational research on neurotoxicity caused by environmental and pharmaceutical agents, including herbicides like glufosinate ammonium and nicotine overdose, with a focus on neurological sequelae and rare pathological findings. The integration of materials science and clinical toxicology defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach to solving real-world challenges in energy efficiency and human health.

Orifice Design of a Pilot-Operated Pressure Relief Valve
Sang Chan Jang, Jung Ho Kang
SJR Q3Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology

An important safety factor to be considered when designing a plant is the prevention of overpressure-induced explosions, to which many plants are vulnerable because of pressurized fluids in plant components. A pilot-operated pressure relief valve is a core device for venting off overpressure formed inside vessels and pipelines. The pilot-operated pressure relief valve has a highly complicated structure, and its design and production should be thoroughly studied. In this study, a simplified struc

Prolonged cognitive dysfunction in patient with splenial lesion of the corpus callosum caused by glufosinate ammonium poisoning
Hyun Jung Lee, Jeong Ho Kang
SJR Q2Turkish Journal of Emergency MedicineOA

Glufosinate ammonium (GLA) is widely used as a commercial herbicide in many countries. Neurotoxicity of GLA has been associated with serious neurological complications such as loss of consciousness, convulsions, and memory impairment. Late-onset memory impairment due to GLA-induced hippocampal lesions is the most distinct clinical feature in GLA poisoning. However, the lesion of the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) is a rare condition in GLA poisoning, so the clinical features are not well

A rare case of intestinal obstruction: Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis of unknown cause
Jeong Ho Kang
SJR Q2Turkish Journal of Emergency MedicineOA

Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) is characterized by the partial or complete enclosing of the small intestines by a thick fibro-collagenous membrane, which can cause recurrent intestinal obstruction. SEP is a clinically rare disease, and the major risk factor is peritoneal dialysis (PD). Early diagnosis of SEP is an important factor in the patient's prognosis, but it is clinically difficult. A 52-year-old woman visited the emergency department (ED) with a 2-day history of abdominal pai

Progressive nicotine poisoning by multiple transdermal nicotine patches
Jeong Ho Kang, Sung Kgun Lee
Journal of Medicine and Life ScienceOA

The pharmacokinetic properties of transdermal nicotine patches (TNPs) are different from those of other routes of nicotine administration; further, acute nicotine poisoning by TNPs may present with different clinical features. In the present report, we describe the case of a 23-year-old woman who was admitted to emergency department (ED) at Jeju National University Hospital with loss of consciousness. Five hours before the ED visit, she used multiple TNPs to attempt suicide. Initially, nausea an

Characteristics of Farmers' Injuries in Jeju
Jeong Ho Kang, Jihwan Bu, Woo Jeong Kim
Asia-pacific Journal of Multimedia services convergent with Art Humanities and Sociology

Farmers' injuries are more frequent and severe than those in the other job groups. To identify the characteristics of agricultural injuries in Jeju, 119 first aid records and emergency department based injury surveillance system data for four years were analyzed retrospectively. Farmers' injuries in 119 first aid records were 1,947 cases, and mean age of injured patients was 63.9±11.8 years. The proportion of major trauma was 27.4%. The more frequent months of farmers' injuries were from August

Relation of optic nerve sheath with intracranial pressure in brain magnetic resonance imaging
Jeong-Ho Kang, Woojeong Kim, Young-Joon Kang
Advanced science and technology letters

Elevated intracranial pressure (EICP) is important cause of the mental change. Recent studies by using ultrasound show that optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) increase in the patients with EICP. We compared the diameter of optic nerve sheath and mass effect in the magnetic resonance image(MRI). In the T1 weighted image, we measured the optic nerve sheath diameter at the 3 mm posterior of eye glove. 31 patients were involved. 14 patients showed mass effect and were suspicious of EICP. 17 patients
