Professor Junsung Cho's research lab focuses on labor market dynamics, with an emphasis on inequality, job stability, and the impact of technological change—particularly robotization—on employment and working conditions. The lab investigates gender disparities in labor market outcomes, the effects of public health crises on mobility and labor participation, and the role of education in shaping student satisfaction and workforce readiness. Using longitudinal and big data analytics, the lab conducts empirical studies on social protection, labor market polarization, and policy effectiveness in South Korea and OECD contexts.

Ayoung Lee, Joonmo Cho
SJR Q1International Journal for Equity in HealthOA

Disasters like epidemics can occur unexpectedly and affect certain groups more than other. Therefore, medical protection should be enhanced for groups vulnerable to disease and economic measures are also required for the protection of their livelihoods in the labor market to prevent unemployment stemming from inequality.

Persistence of the Gender Gap and Low Employment of Female Workers in a Stratified Labor Market: Evidence from South Korea
Joonmo Cho, Jae‐Seong Lee
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

The gender gap in working conditions has barely improved in South Korea where various measures for gender equality have been in place for a relatively long time. Furthermore, the female employment rate is also the lowest in OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries. This study will evaluate the stratified structure of the labor market to identify the causes and will analyze changes in the gender employment distribution and mobility. This study conducted an empirical

Identifying Factors Affecting the Quality of Teaching in Basic Science Education: Physics, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, and Chemistry
Joonmo Cho, Wonyoung Baek
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

Basic science education provides the most fundamental knowledge for preparing students to pursue departmental major courses. Considering that basic science courses are laboratory classes conducted alongside theory classes, the factors affecting instructor–student communication and feedback can vary between theory and laboratory classes. We applied the ordinary least squares model to the refined data of basic science courses. We drew on variables reflecting instructor–student interaction such as

Older Adults’ Avoidance of Public Transportation after the Outbreak of COVID-19: Korean Subway Evidence
Byungjin Park, Joonmo Cho
SJR Q2HealthcareOA

With the spread of the coronavirus worldwide, nations have implemented policies restricting the movement of people to minimize the possibility of infection. Although voluntary restriction is a key factor in reducing mobility, it has only been emphasized in terms of the effect of governments' mobility restriction measures. This research aimed to analyze voluntary mass transportation use after the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak by age group to explore how the

Identifying Factors Reinforcing Robotization: Interactive Forces of Employment, Working Hour and Wage
Joonmo Cho, Jinha Kim
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

Unlike previous studies on robotization approaching the future based on the cutting-edge technologies and adopting a framework where robotization is considered as an exogenous variable, this study considers that robotization occurs endogenously and uses it as a dependent variable for an objective examination of the effect of robotization on the labor market. To this end, a robotization indicator is created based on the actual number of industrial robots currently deployed in workplaces, and a mu

Affirmative Action and Corporate Compliance in South Korea
Joonmo Cho, Taehee Kwon
SJR Q1Feminist Economics

Abstract The Affirmative Action Act was introduced in South Korea in 2006 to increase female employment and correct discriminatory hiring practices. Using the combined data sets of survey and the Act's implementation plan, this paper provides logit estimation results to examine empirically how political perceptions or attitudes of firms influence corporate noncompliance with the Act. DUALISM IN JOB STABILITY OF THE KOREAN LABOUR MARKET: THE IMPACT OF THE 1997 FINANCIAL CRISIS
Joonmo Cho, Jaeho Keum
SJR Q3Pacific Economic Review

Abstract. This paper measures the dynamic changes in job stability in the Korean labour market during the period between the 1997 financial crisis and the recovery. Drawing on the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study data, our empirical research shows that the sharp decline in job stability experienced by Korean workers during the 1997 financial crisis never bounced back to the previous level. The recovery process was much slower for irregular, short‐tenured or less educated workers than the othe

On using mandatory retirement to reduce workforce in korea
Joonmo Cho, Sunwoong Kim
SJR Q2International Economic Journal

Since the financial crisis in 1998, many Korean corporations with low profitability and excessive liabilities cut operating costs. They had to deal with exorbitant wage increases that outpaced productivity and were generated by the traditional seniority-based wage system. The empirical analysis of this study suggests that those companies with many long tenure workers under the Japanese-style personnel management system are more likely to utilize mandatory retirement in order to adjust employment
