Professor Juwon Kang's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary biomedical and environmental sciences, with key research directions in cancer pharmacology, nanoscale optical phenomena, environmental health, and water resource recovery. The lab investigates bioactive compounds from natural sources—such as Ginkgo biloba—for their anticancer mechanisms, particularly in oral cancer. It also explores nanoplasmnic effects for advanced optical applications and examines environmental factors, including air pollutants and vitamin D status, in relation to chronic diseases like atopic dermatitis and respiratory conditions. Additionally, the lab develops sustainable water treatment technologies, such as ozone-UV systems, for efficient reuse of sewage effluent.

We present a local capacitor model that enables a simple yet quantitatively accurate description of lightning rod effect in nanoplasmonics. A notion of lambda-zone capacitance is proposed and applied to predict the strongly induced electric field by a light source near nanoscale metal edges such as metal tip or metal gap. This study was aimed at exploring the reclamation of sewage treatment plant effluent water (SEW) as an alternative water resource. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the efficiency of acetone removal by electron beam irradiation in groundwater and the effect of various conditions. According to the results, the removal kinetics of acetone were pseudo first-order, and the removal efficiencies were expressed to the (%) removal and G-values. By adding sulfite, it was confirmed that acetone was mainly degraded by the reaction with the hydrated electrons. The presence of nitrate caused the removal of acetone to decrease.
A 76-year-old woman presented with a several-year history of slow-growing masses on both lateral aspects of her tongue. She reported having no pain, dysphagia, or dysarthria. She also reported no intake of alcohol, and she was not obese (body-mass index [the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters], 23.4).
