研究室紹介
Professor Karam Nam's research lab specializes in clinical and translational research within cardiovascular and anesthesiology sciences, with a focus on improving surgical outcomes and patient safety. Key research directions include optimizing perioperative management in heart transplantation, evaluating oxygenation strategies during off-pump coronary surgery, and enhancing airway management techniques in patients with spinal instability. The lab also investigates hemodynamic and transfusion-related factors affecting postoperative outcomes in high-risk cardiac procedures.

15Yeast RNA lariat debranching enzyme has been purified to near homogeneity using a bacterial overproducer of the enzyme. The enzyme is capable of digesting a variety of branched nucleic acid substrates, including group II intron lariats, multicopy single-stranded DNAs (msDNAs), and a variety of synthetic branched RNAs. A trinucleotide release assay using radiolabeled msDNA substrates was developed and used to determine the basic biochemical parameters for the enzyme. The debranching enzyme shows
The DNTP technique had a greater first-attempt success rate of radial artery cannulation compared to the conventional LAX-IP technique. Also, DNTP required significantly less time for cannulation and had fewer complications.
BACKGROUND: In patients with an unstable cervical spine, maintenance of cervical immobilization during tracheal intubation is important. In McGrath videolaryngoscopic intubation, lifting of the blade to raise the epiglottis is needed to visualize the glottis, but in patients with an unstable cervical spine, this can cause cervical spine movement. By contrast, the Optiscope, a rigid video-stylet, does not require raising of the epiglottis during tracheal intubation. We therefore hypothesized that
BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing heart transplantation (HT) frequently receive perioperative red blood cell (RBC) transfusions, but the impact of perioperative transfusion on clinical outcomes after HT remains unclear. METHODS: All adult HTs performed in Korea between 2007 and 2016 were analyzed using data from the National Health Insurance Service. Patients were classified into four groups based on the number of RBC units transfused during hospital admission for HT: 0, 1 to 2, 3 to 5, and greate
BACKGROUND: To maintain adequate oxygenation is of utmost importance in intraoperative care. However, clinical evidence supporting specific oxygen levels in distinct surgical settings is lacking. This study aimed to compare the effects of 30% and 80% oxygen in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB). METHODS: This multicenter trial was conducted in three tertiary hospitals from August 2019 to August 2021. Patients undergoing OPCAB were cluster-randomized to receive either 30% or 80% oxy
The relationship between lower institutional case-volume and higher mortality after complex high-risk procedures has been shown. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of institutional volume on patient outcome after heart transplantation (HT) in the entire Korean population. We analyzed all adult HTs performed in Korea between 2007 and 2016 using data from the National Health Insurance Service. The association between case-volume and in-hospital mortality after HT was analyzed after cate
Throughout the long history of surgery, there has been great advancement in the hemodynamic management of surgical patients. Traditionally, hemodynamic management has focused on macrocirculatory monitoring and intervention to maintain appropriate oxygen delivery. However, even after optimization of macro-hemodynamic parameters, microcirculatory dysfunction, which is related to higher postoperative complications, occurs in some patients. Although the clinical significance of microcirculatory dysf
