Professor Kim Kyuseok's research lab specializes in integrative and translational medicine, focusing on the scientific validation of traditional herbal medicine through modern pharmacological and systems biology approaches. The lab investigates the mechanisms of herbal formulas and individual medicinal herbs in treating inflammatory and immune-mediated skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis, acne, and alopecia areata. Utilizing network pharmacology, bioinformatics, and preclinical disease models, the lab aims to uncover novel therapeutic targets and mechanisms underlying herbal treatments. The research also emphasizes clinical translation through randomized controlled trials evaluating acupuncture and herbal extracts in dermatological conditions.

The dopamine D(2) receptor (D2R) plays a critical role in diverse neurophysiological functions. D2R knock-out mice (D2R(-/-)) show reduced food intake and body weight while displaying an increased basal energy expenditure level, compared with their wild type littermates. This is the first study to investigate serum lipids, amino acids, and cytokines in subjects with acne. We analyzed the differences between metabolomic profiles to determine the diagnostic value of PI. Prospective studies with more patients are needed to confirm the characteristics of each PI and lipidomic data will enrich knowledge concerning lipid mechanism.
