Professor Kyosang Kim's research lab focuses on translational anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, with a strong emphasis on improving patient outcomes through innovative pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Key research directions include neuromuscular blockade management, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) prevention, and the application of acupuncture-based therapies such as capsicum plaster at specific acupoints. The lab also investigates cellular mechanisms of oxidative stress in vascular smooth muscle cells, particularly the role of RAC1 in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during reoxygenation injury. These studies bridge molecular mechanisms with clinical applications in anesthesia and critical care.

We demonstrate that adenoviral-mediated gene transfer of a dominant negative rac1 gene product (N17rac1) inhibits the intracellular burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that occurs after reoxygenation of vascular smooth muscle cells.
