Professor Kyoung Un Park's research lab specializes in molecular diagnostics and genetic markers for gastrointestinal and hematological diseases, with a focus on identifying non-invasive biomarkers for early cancer detection. The lab investigates epigenetic and genetic alterations in gastric and colorectal cancers, including plasma-based markers like mSEPT9 and MYC/GAPDH ratios, as well as molecular genotyping strategies for RhD-negative blood donors. Their work also extends to microbial identification using 16S rRNA and tuf gene sequencing, particularly in coagulase-negative staphylococci, and explores host-microbe interactions in gastric carcinogenesis, such as the role of Lewis antigens and *H. pylori* virulence factors.

15Considering the high incidence of plasma mSEPT9 in intestinal or mixed type GCs similar to CRCs, GC should be examined through the plasma mSEPT9 screening test. In addition, plasma mSEPT9 is proposed as a follow-up marker in CRC patients, but further validation is required.
We compared and analyzed 16S rRNA and tuf gene sequences for 97 clinical isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) by use of the GenBank, MicroSeq, EzTaxon, and BIBI databases. Discordant results for definitive identification were observed and differed according to the different databases and target genes. Although higher percentages of sequence identity were obtained with GenBank and MicroSeq for 16S rRNA analysis, the BIBI and EzTaxon databases produced less ambiguous results. Greater
BACKGROUND: Three phenotypic identification systems (MicroScan, VITEK 2, and Crystal GP) were evaluated for their accuracy to identify coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). A total of 120 clinical isolates confirmed to be CNS via 16S rRNA sequencing and analysis with the MicroSeq 500 v2.0 database were assessed. RESULTS: The MicroScan, VITEK 2, and Crystal GP systems correctly identified 82.5%, 87.5%, and 67.5% of the isolates, respectively. Misidentification was the main problem in MicroScan
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to provide an effective RHD genotyping strategy for the East Asian blood donors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: RhD phenotyping, weak D testing and RhCE phenotyping were performed on 110 samples from members of the RhD-negative club, private organization composed of RhD-negative blood donors, in the GwangJu-Chonnam region of Korea. The RHD promoter, intron 4, and exons 7 and 10 were analysed by real-time PCR. Two nucleotide changes (c.1227 G>A, and
Lewis (Le)-associated antigens are carbohydrates that are related biochemically to the ABO blood groups, and may have a role in Helicobacter pylori adherence. To evaluate their relationship to clinicopathological outcomes, gastric Le expression, including type 1 precursor, type 1 H, Le(a), Le(b), Le(x), Le(y) and sialylated Le(a) (CA19-9), was evaluated immunohistochemically in 233 gastric biopsy specimens obtained at routine gastroscopy. Expression was also investigated in gastric tissues showi
These findings suggest that the plasma MYC/GAPDH ratio, as determined by real-time PCR, may be an alternative non-invasive approach for detecting gastric cancer.
The exploration of oral microbiome has been increasing due to its relatedness with various systemic diseases, but standardization of saliva sampling for microbiome analysis has not been established, contributing to the lack of data comparability. Here, we evaluated the factors that influence the microbiome data. Saliva samples were collected by the two collection methods (passive drooling and mouthwash) using three saliva-preservation methods (OMNIgene, DNA/RNA shield, and simple collection). A
The infusion of natural killer (NK) cells is a promising therapy for patients with advanced malignancies. Clinical expanded NK-cell products were compared with freshly isolated NK cells. Autologous peripheral blood mononuclear cells were collected by apheresis from 8 patients. NK cells were isolated by anti-CD3-negative selection followed by anti-CD56-positive selection. They were then expanded by co-culture with interleukin-2 and an irradiated Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed lymphoblastoid
BACKGROUND: Haptoglobin polymorphism is associated with the prevalence of infections, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and other disorders. Congenital haptoglobin deficiency is associated with anaphylactic transfusion reactions in anhaptoglobinaemic patients with antihaptoglobin antibody. AIMS: To investigate haptoglobin genotypic distribution (including the Hp(0) allele) and associated serum haptoglobin concentrations in Koreans. METHODS: Five hundred and nine healthy Korean adults
