Professor Kyung-A Lee's research lab focuses on maternal-fetal medicine and reproductive health, with a strong emphasis on improving perinatal outcomes through biomedical research and health policy. The lab investigates critical issues such as preterm birth prediction using Bayesian modeling, early biomarkers for preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction, and the impact of maternal infections—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic—on pregnancy outcomes. The lab also explores the biological and molecular mechanisms underlying human parturition, including gene expression changes in the uteroplacental unit, to better understand the onset of labor and improve clinical management.

METHODS: We performed a retrospective population-based cohort study in infants born with structural congenital heart defects (CHDs) between 1979 and 2005 and ascertained by the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program. We estimated Kaplan-Meier survival probabilities for 12 CCHD phenoty
We suggest that Bayesian filtering (PopBayes) is a customizable and useful tool in establishing a model for the prediction of preterm birth.
We suggest that urinary nephrin can be used as an early marker in pregnancies at risk for developing PE and SGA infants.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, pregnant women have been classified as a vulnerable population. However, the evidence on the effect of infection during pregnancy on maternal and neonatal outcomes is still uncertain, and related research comprising a large population of pregnant women in Asian countries is limited. We constructed a national cohort including mothers and children (369,887 pairs) registered in the Prevention Agency-COVID-19-National Health Insurance Service (COV-N), from January 1
BACKGROUND: Despite increasing evidence that human parturition is associated with alteration in gene expression in the uteroplacental unit, the precise mechanisms that elicit spontaneous term labor in humans remain unknown. Our goal in this study was to compare the mRNA expression pattern of the trophoblast layer of normal term placenta between women who had given natural birth (labor group) and those who had undergone an elective cesarean section without labor (non-labor group). METHODS: We col
Background: Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal agenesis (OHVIRA) syndrome, also known as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome, is a rare syndrome characterized by the triad of uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. Most cases of OHVIRA have been reported in adolescents or adults. Gartner duct cysts, including those manifesting as vaginal wall cysts, are also rare. Fetal OHVIRA syndrome and Gartner duct cysts are difficult to diagnose. Case Presentation: He
OBJECTIVES: Although previous epidemiological studies have reported the effects of fetal exposure to phthalates and phenols on birth outcomes, evidence is still limited. The objective of this study was to investigate whether prenatal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals [EDCs; phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA)] is associated with birth outcomes and whether there are sex-specific effects. METHODS: We used data from the Korean CHildren's ENvironmental health Study (Ko-CHENS) cohort. Exposure
Objective: The study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of fetuses diagnosed with isolated mega cisterna magna in utero. Methods: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted across 18 university hospitals from 2010 to 2019. Cases diagnosed with isolated mega cisterna magna, defined as a cisterna magna >10 mm with a normal cerebellar vermis and no cystic dilation of the fourth ventricle, were included. Cases with other central nervous system (CNS) anomalies, extra–central ne
Background and Objectives: Preterm birth (PTB), defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, remains a significant public health concern due to its association with neonatal morbidity and mortality. Although studies have suggested that microbial factors in vaginal microbiota (VMB) influence PTB, longitudinal research on Korean women is limited. This study aimed to analyze VMB differences between term and preterm pregnancies in Korean women and their correlation with the cervical length (CL)
Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is one of the leading causes of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Many studies have reported an association between FGR and fetal Doppler indices focusing on umbilical artery (UA), middle cerebral artery (MCA), and ductus venosus (DV). The uteroplacental-fetal circulation which affects the fetal growth consists of not only UA, MCA, and DV, but also umbilical vein (UV), placenta and uterus itself. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of large-scale cohort studies that
