Professor Kyung-A Ko's research lab specializes in oral and maxillofacial regenerative medicine, with a primary focus on guided bone regeneration (GBR), alveolar ridge augmentation, and the clinical application of biomaterials such as platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), collagen membranes, and natural extracts. The lab investigates tissue engineering strategies to enhance bone formation and soft tissue stability following tooth extraction or implant placement, integrating histomorphometric, micro-CT, and clinical outcome analyses. A key research direction involves evaluating novel therapeutic agents—like mangosteen and propolis extracts—for their anti-inflammatory and regenerative potential in periodontal disease. The lab also explores surgical protocols, including immediate versus delayed implant loading and apically positioned flaps with collagen matrices, to optimize long-term prosthetic outcomes.
