研究室紹介

Professor Kyungsik Kim's research lab focuses on interdisciplinary studies spanning biomedical engineering, environmental health, and civil infrastructure. The lab investigates clinical outcomes and risk factors in gastrointestinal and liver cancers, particularly bile duct and hepatocellular carcinomas, with an emphasis on surgical resection and postoperative recurrence. It also explores environmental and behavioral factors influencing thyroid cancer, including iodine intake and thyroid function. Additionally, the lab applies advanced computational modeling to improve structural design standards, particularly for buried box culverts and soil-structure interaction in highway infrastructure.

SJR Q2PancreasOA

Malignant SPTs are low-grade tumors with good prognosis. Adequate surgical intervention is necessary. Especially, SPTs over 5 cm in diameter need to be treated carefully because of the chance of malignant pathology. Careful long-term follow-up is necessary in those patients in case of possible tumor recurrences.

The mediating effect of place attachment on the relationship between golf tourism destination image and revisit intention
Huimin Song, Kyungsik Kim, Brian H. Yim
SJR Q1Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research

Focusing on golf tourism in Hainan Province, this study examined the relationship between place attachment, golf tourism destination image, and revisit intention of golf tourists. Data were obtained using questionnaires distributed to golf tourists in Hainan Province, China in 2016. Survey data from 218 tourists indicated that destination image was positively related to place attachment. Moreover, place attachment mediated the relationship between destination image and revisit intention. Implica

Design Loading on Deeply Buried Box Culverts
Kyungsik Kim, Chai H. Yoo
SJR Q1Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering

The current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standard specifications for highway bridges and AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications stipulate the computation of the design load on the box culvert primarily based on research by Marston and Spangler. Although this procedure may be applied conservatively for most ordinary culverts, an opportunity exists to evaluate a more realistic soil-structure interaction behavior based on modern finite element analys

SJR Q1Journal of Surgical OncologyOA

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to analyze the survival outcome and the clinicopathological factors that influence survival and recurrence of middle and distal bile duct cancer after surgical resection. METHODS: From January 2000 to June 2007, 125 patients underwent surgical resection for middle and distal bile duct cancer. The clinicopathological characteristics and survival outcomes were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Of the 125 patients, 31 patients underwent se

Portal venous invasion: The single most independent risk factor for immediate postoperative recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma

SJR Q1Journal of Gastroenterology and HepatologyOA

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Despite improvements of treatment in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the recurrence rate after curative hepatic resection still remains remarkably high. An immediate recurrence of HCC after surgery is frustrating. We tried to clarify risks of immediate postoperative recurrence of HCC; that is, within 4 months after curative hepatic resection. METHODS: A total of 167 patients with HCC underwent hepatic resection; 60 had immediate postoperative recurrences (IPR group), and 107

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the effects of iodine intake, thyroid function, and their combined effect on the risk of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). METHODS: A case-control study was conducted including 500 community-based controls who had undergone a health check-up, and 446 overall PTC cases (209 PTC and 237 PTMC) from the Thyroid Cancer Longitudinal Study. Urinary iodine concentration (UIC), was used as an indicator of iodine intake, and

SJR Q1Thyroid

<b><i>Background:</i></b> Active surveillance (AS) has been established as an alternative to immediate surgery for low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). Nonetheless, it remains difficult to decide between AS and immediate surgery, since limited objective evidence exists regarding risks and benefits. The aim of study is to compare the cumulative costs of AS and immediate surgery. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> To estimate cumulative costs, a hypothetical model is simulated based on the Multic
