Professor Lee Kwangseok's research lab specializes in surgical reconstruction and urological disorders, with a strong focus on microvascular reconstruction using free vascularized osteocutaneous fibular grafts for complex bone and soft tissue defects. The lab also investigates the application of artificial intelligence in urological diagnostics, particularly in bladder cancer detection using cystoscopic imaging. Additionally, the lab explores predictive biomarkers and metabolic factors in urological conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and acute pancreatitis-related complications. Their work bridges clinical surgery, medical imaging, and data-driven diagnostics to improve patient outcomes.

15The authors reviewed retrospectively the clinical results of 51 consecutive cases of vascularized osteocutaneous fibular graft to the tibia for the reconstruction of extensive tibial bone and soft-tissue defects. The mean duration of follow-up was 31 months (range: 13 to 76 months). In the 51 procedures of free vascularized osteocutaneous fibula graft from the contralateral side, bony union was achieved in 48 cases at an average of 3.74 months after the operation, except for two cases of non-uni
We reviewed the clinical results of reconstruction performed for extensive tibial bone and soft tissue defect with a free vascularized osteocutaneous fibular graft in 46 patients (43 male and 3 female). The mean duration of follow-up was 30 months (range 13-76 months). The mean age at the time of reconstruction was 41 years (range 15-66 years). In the 46 consecutive procedures of free vascularized osteocutaneous fibular grafts, bony union was achieved in 43 grafted fibulae at an average of 3.75
We evaluate the diagnostic performance of deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) for bladder cancer, which used white-light images (WLIs) and narrow-band images, and tumor grade prediction of AI based on tumor color using the red/green/blue (RGB) method. This retrospective study analyzed 10,991 cystoscopic images of suspicious bladder tumors using a mask region-based convolutional neural network with a ResNeXt-101-32 × 8d-FPN backbone. The diagnostic performance of AI was evaluated by calcul
PURPOSE: Stone size and location are generally considered the most important factors associated with spontaneous ureter stone passage (SSP). Several parameters related to inflammatory changes have been identified as predictors associated with SSP. Our aim was to investigate the predictive role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) for SSP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 131 patients who were referred to the urology outpatient clinic and diagnosed with unilateral
This study aimed to investigate the metabolic syndrome-related risk factors for the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in healthy men.A total of 4880 healthy men who underwent transrectal ultrasonography at our hospital during routine health examinations were included in this study. Those who had undergone a prior biopsy or surgery for prostate disease, were suspected of having urinary tract infection, or were taking BPH/LUTS or metabolic s
The DNI is useful as a predictive factor for sepsis and bacteremia in patients with AP. Without mandatory cystostomy, intermittent catheterization could be one of the useful management options of AUR in patients with AP.
PURPOSE: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a common complication after spinal surgery. However, no clear definition of POUR currently exists, and no studies have evaluated the management of POUR. We aimed to investigate the prognostic factors for eventual POUR-free status in spinal surgery patients. METHODS: The records of patients who received a urologic consultation for POUR from January 2015 to December 2016 were reviewed. POUR-free status was defined as a voiding volume (VV) >100 mL
From March 1982 to December 1992, 30 cases of thumb reconstruction with a free neurovascular wrap-around flap from the big toe were performed at Korea University Hospital. Twenty-nine of a total of 30 cases were successful and obtained excellent functional and cosmetic results. Postoperative complications included 1 case of graft failure, 6 partial skin necroses, 1 malunion, and 15 cases of resorption of iliac bone graft including 1 case of fatigue fracture of grafted bone. Even for the first me
Congenital pseudarthrosis of the ulna is very rare. We have experienced a case of pseudarthrosis of ulna to be treated with the vascularized fibular graft in a seven-years-and-three-month-old boy.
OBJECTIVES: To develop a prediction model of spontaneous ureteral stone passage (SSP) using machine learning and logistic regression and compare the performance of the two models. Indications for management of ureteral stones are unclear, and the clinician determines whether to wait for SSP or perform active treatment, especially in well-controlled patients, to avoid unwanted complications. Therefore, suggesting the possibility of SSP would help make a clinical decision regarding ureteral stones
In 1980, Morrison and O'Brien reported their experiences with the reconstruction of an amputated thumb using a wrap-around neurovascular free flap from the great toe, but its indication has been limited distal to the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint (Morrison et al., J Hand Surg 5:575-583, 1980). We have performed 37 wrap-around free flaps from the great toe for the reconstruction of thumbs amputated at distal or proximal to the MP joint and investigated their functional results according to the l
Tendocutaneous free flap transfer has been used to treat troublesome wounds involving skin and tendons, with the dorsum of the foot being the most frequent donor site. Free flaps consist of the dorsalis pedis artery, saphenous vein, branch of the superficial peroneal nerve, long extensor tendons, and overlying skin. We analyzed 13 cases of skin and tendon loss from the dorsum of the hand and wrist that were treated with tendocutaneous free flap from the dorsum of the foot. The size of the flap w
AC does not seem to reduce mortality in patients with advanced upper tract urothelial carcinoma after RNU. In the subgroup of patients with LVI, AC had a positive impact on cancer-specific survival and overall survival. LVI would be helpful for selecting patients who are appropriate for AC.
