Professor Mee Kum Kim's research lab focuses on the intersection of ocular immunology, stem cell therapy, and the gut–eye axis in autoimmune and inflammatory eye diseases. The lab investigates the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells and their secretome in corneal injury and dry eye disease, while also exploring how gut microbiota dysbiosis contributes to systemic and ocular autoimmunity, particularly in Sjögren’s syndrome. Using advanced imaging and omics technologies, the lab aims to develop novel, non-transplantation-based therapies for corneal and ocular surface disorders.

To investigate the anti-inflammatory and anti-angiogenic effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in the chemically burned corneas, we mechanically removed the corneal epithelium of rats after 100% alcohol instillation. Sjögren's syndrome showed significant gut dysbiosis compared to controls and environmental dry eye syndrome, while dry eye patients showed compositional changes of gut microbiome somewhere in between Sjögren's syndrome and controls.
