Modeling Credit Card Borrowing: A Comparison of Type I and Type II Tobit Approaches
Insik Min, Jong‐Ho Kim
SJR Q2Southern Economic Journal

This study focuses on credit cards as a borrowing medium using 1998 Survey of Consumer Finance data. The type II Tobit approach used here overcomes a shortcoming of the conventional type I Tobit model, which restricts the coefficients of the binary borrowing decision (the first step) and balance level decision (the second step) to have the same sign. By separately estimating the first and second steps as reduced-form functions in which the overall effects of supply and demand are incorporated, t

A Monte Carlo comparison of parametric and nonparametric quantile regressions
Insik Min, Inchul Kim
SJR Q3Applied Economics Letters

Abstract This study compares parametric and nonparametric quantile regression methods using Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results indicate that the nonparametric quantile regression approach is more appropriate, particularly when the underlying model is nonlinear or the error term follows a non-normal distribution. Estimating endogenous switching regression model with a flexible parametric distribution function: application to Korean housing demand
Pilsun Choi, Insik Min
SJR Q2Applied Economics

This study introduces Johnson's SU -normal distribution which can accommodate the flexibility of true error distribution to obtain consistent estimates in an endogenous switching regression model. Simulation results indicate that the SU -normal model outperforms the normal model for the consistency of estimators when the error distribution is nonnormal. Korean housing demand model estimated by the SU -normal model also outperforms the normal model in terms of parameter estimates and graphical pr

A Monte Carlo Comparison of Various Semiparametric Type-3 Tobit Estimators
Insik Min, Sheng jang Sheu, Zijun Wang
SJR Q4Annals of economics and finance

This paper compares recently developed semiparametric estimators of Type-3 Tobit model using Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we examine the finite sample performance of the recently proposed method by Li and Wooldridge and compare it to some alternative semiparametric estimators. Simulation results indicated that Li and Wooldridge (2002) estimator under the independence restriction compares well relative to other alternative estimators, especially when the sample size is small or the err

Measuring environmental inequality from air pollution and health conditions
Pilsun Choi, Insik Min
SJR Q3Applied Economics Letters

This paper uses panel regression to examine the adverse health effects of fine particles moderated by household income. To identify the causal effect, we employ data from two sources, Korea Health Panel and AirKorea, during the period between 2014 and 2015. We first find that the negative effect of bad air quality is statistically significant for most income groups. Second, this adverse effect of air pollution is moderated by household income levels. This indicates that high-income families are

A nonparametric test of the conditional normality of housing demand
Insik Min
SJR Q3Applied Economics Letters

This study provides a nonparametric test for the parametric conditional distribution in the sample selection model. The nonparametric test statistic proposed by Fan et al . (2006 Fan, Y, Li, Q and Min, I. 2006. A nonparametric bootstrap test of conditional distributions. Econometric Theory, 22: 587–613. [Crossref] , [Google Scholar]) is applied to the Korean housing demand model. Test results indicate that the conditional normality in the housing expenditure equation is rejected.

An alternative semiparametric estimate of the base-independence equivalence scale: an application to US consumer expenditure survey data
Inchul Kim, Insik Min
SJR Q2Applied Economics

This study proposes a semiparametric estimate and a test for base-independence equivalence scale. Our semiparametric approach is based on nondensity weighted loss function in contrast to Pendakur's (1999) density weighted loss function. Simulation results indicate that our specification tends to produce a smaller bias in estimating the equivalence scale and thus a more reliable test for base-independence hypothesis. We also provide an application using US Consumer Expenditure Survey data.
