Professor Min-Jae Kim's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal and metabolic health, with a strong emphasis on the pathophysiology of postoperative ileus, Helicobacter pylori-related gastric carcinogenesis, and the immune mechanisms underlying metachronous neoplasms. The lab investigates the protective roles of probiotics and microbial modulation in intestinal barrier function and inflammation, while also exploring lifestyle and environmental factors affecting sleep quality and chronic conditions such as lower back pain. Additionally, the lab contributes to translational research in oncology, particularly in multiple primary cancers and their clinical outcomes. The integration of clinical gastroenterology with immunology and environmental health defines the lab’s multidisciplinary approach.

15Background/Aims: We explored the mechanisms underlying the improvement of postoperative ileus (POI) following probiotic pretreatment. We assessed intestinal permeability, inflammation, tight junction (TJ) protein expression in the gut epithelium, and plasma interleukin (IL)-17 levels in a guinea pig model of POI. Methods: Guinea pigs were divided into control, POI, and probiotic groups. The POI and probiotic groups underwent surgery, but the probiotic group received probiotics before the procedu
The purpose of this study is to examine the sleep environment, sleep quality and to reveal the relationship between sleep environment and obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome. The subjects of this study are twenty four women who live in an apartment in Seoul. We conducted pre-sleep questionnaire and post-sleep questionnaire. We measured equivalent noise level, illumination, air temperature, relative humidity, MRT, CO2 concentration, and AHI of each subject in their bedrooms. In case of both
BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is a significant contributing factor of gastric cancer. Metachronous neoplasms also pose a risk. The mechanism underlying the impact of H. pylori eradication on preventing metachronous gastric cancer is unclear. This study aimed to investigate immunity changes in gastric mucosa after H. pylori eradication and to identify mechanisms preventing metachronous recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with gastric neoplasm and H. pylori infection,
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between type of physical activity(PA), sedentary time(ST) and lower back pain(LBP). Additionally, the association between lifestyle, demographic factors and lower back pain was investigated. A total of 1,781 subjects above 50 years of age who had participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) of 2014 were included for the analysis in this study. Chi-square test and univariable logistic regression were
Purpose We investigated the clinicopathologic information of patients with gastric cancer with multiple primary cancers (GC-MPC) of three or more sites. Materials and Methods Between 1995 and 2009, 105,908 patients were diagnosed with malignancy at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University Health System. Of these, 113 (0.1%) patients with MPC of three or more sites were registered, and 41 (36.3%) of these were GC-MPC. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data and overall survival using the medic
As power demands increase, development of the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is being watched with interest. Many types of SFCLs using various superconducting materials have been developed. Especially, the FCL using coated conductor (CC) has been investigated actively at present. CCs have many advantages for the FCL application. YBCO materials used in CCs have a high n-value, and it is relatively easy to choose a matrix of the CC for high resistivity. If the CC has high resistivity
Large critical current is one of the prerequisites for the design of superconducting electrical equipments with large power capacity. To enlarge the critical current, multiple parallel connection is inevitable. In multiple parallel superconducting coils, the difference in normal resistance of each shunt leads to unequal current distribution, which may yield burnout. Therefore, uniform current distribution is required for a stable operation of multiple parallel superconducting coils. In this pape
Background: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are associated with chronic inflammation that may increase fracture risk; however, their impact within specific populations, such as those with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between IMIDs and fracture risk, leveraging a large, high-quality population-based cohort of patients with T2DM. Methods: A total of 2,120,900 patients with T2DM without a previous history of fractures w
Postoperative ileus (POI) is a delay in gastrointestinal transit following surgery that leads to various complications. There is limited understanding of its effective treatment options. CKD-495 and eupacidin are natural products licensed for treating mucosal lesions in acute and chronic gastritis; however, little is known about their effects on intestinal permeability. This study evaluated the effects of CKD-495, eupacidin, and its components (eupatilin and cinnamic acid) on intestinal per-meab
Background/Aims: Achalasia is an esophageal motility disorder characterized by dysphagia and noncardiac chest pain. Impairment of vagal function has been reported in achalasia. This study evaluated autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunctions in patients with achalasia to establish a correlation between an ANS dysfunction and the clinical symptoms of achalasia. Methods: Nineteen patients with achalasia (six males/13 females; mean age, 47.1±16.3 years) and 10 healthy controls (four males/six femal
Coated conductor (CC) is recently inactively progress for the research and development, and its can be used various stabilizer for the specific superconducting applicat ions, coated conductor applied to superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs) bypasses fault current to its stabilizer, where the surge is abruptly reduced; thus, stainless stel, which has large resistivity, can be a suitable stabilizer for SFCLs. Despite high n-value of the YBCO, CC stabilized with stainless steel did not effe
Colonoscopy-related adverse events in older adults were linked to frailty and medication use and were not dependent on age. This novel risk score supports personalized decision-making when performing colonoscopies in older adults.
