Professor Mingoo Lee's research lab focuses on epithelial cell physiology, particularly the regulation of ion and fluid secretion in secretory epithelia. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying calcium signaling, chloride and bicarbonate transport, and the pathophysiology of epithelial disorders such as cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis, and Sjögren’s syndrome. Key research directions include the functional interaction between CFTR and anion exchangers, subcellular localization and roles of calcium pumps, and the genetic basis of drug-induced liver injury via MRP2 polymorphisms. The lab employs advanced imaging, electrophysiology, and molecular biology techniques to dissect epithelial transport and signaling pathways at the cellular and subcellular levels.

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is a cell-surface anion channel that permeates chloride and bicarbonate ions. The most frequent mutation of CFTR that causes cystic fibrosis is the deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (ΔF508), which leads to defects in protein folding and cellular trafficking to the plasma membrane. The lack of the cell-surface CFTR results in a reduction in the lifespan due to chronic lung infection with progressive deterioration of lung function.
