研究室紹介

Professor Moon Soo Park's research lab focuses on biomedical and biomedical engineering applications, particularly in nephrotoxicity mechanisms, cervical spine degeneration, and plasma-based sterilization of medical devices. The lab investigates molecular pathways of drug-induced apoptosis in renal cells, evaluates spinal degeneration using imaging and grading systems, and explores novel plasma technologies for virus inactivation on face masks without compromising functionality. The work bridges clinical medicine, biomedical engineering, and environmental health, with a strong emphasis on translational applications in healthcare.

Cisplatin Induces Apoptosis in LLC-PK1 Cells via Activation of Mitochondrial Pathways
Moon Soo Park, Maryely De Leon, Prasad Devarajan
SJR Q1Journal of the American Society of Nephrology

Cisplatin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic agent, has a major limitation because of its nephrotoxicity. Recent studies have shown that cisplatin causes apoptotic cell death in renal tubule cells, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain to be elucidated. In this study, cisplatin was found to induce apoptosis in a dose- and duration-dependent manner in cultured proximal tubule (LLC-PK1) cells, as evidenced by DNA laddering and TdT-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling assay. Pretreatment with th

Fast and Easy Disinfection of Coronavirus-Contaminated Face Masks Using Ozone Gas Produced by a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Generator

SJR Q1Environmental Science & Technology Letters

During the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks have become limited in stock. Most of sterilization methods are not applicable for eliminating virus from face masks without compromising the filtration efficiency of the masks. In this study, using a human coronavirus (HCoV-229E) as a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2 contamination on KF94 face masks, we show that the virus loses its infectivity with a 4 log reduction when exposed for 10 s to 120 ppm ozone gas produced by a dielectric barrier discharge plasma gen

Facet Joint Degeneration of the Cervical Spine
Moon Soo Park, Yong Beom Lee, Seong-Hwan Moon, Hwan‐Mo Lee, Tae-Hwan Kim, Jong Byung Oh, K. Daniel Riew
SJR Q1SpineOA

It seems that upper cervical levels are more likely to degenerate and to have more advanced degrees of degeneration than the lower cervical levels. As expected, age correlates with worsening degeneration. The proposed computed tomographic grading system for cervical facet arthrosis seemed to be reliable.

Nanosecond-pulsed discharge plasma splitting of carbon dioxide
Moon Soo Bak, Seong-kyun Im, Mark Cappelli
SJR Q2IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science

This paper reports on the study of repetitive nanosecond-pulsed discharge splitting of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) for the production of CO. Gas chromatography is used to analyze the composition of the reformed gas when CO 2 is exposed to high-voltage (15 kV) very short (10 ns) electrical discharges th

Measurement of surface area in human mastoid air cell system
Moon Soo Park, Seong Hoon Yoo, Dong Hoon Lee
SJR Q3The Journal of Laryngology & Otology

The total surface areas of human mastoid air cells were measured using digital CT scans. Using 24 normal ears, the lining of the mastoid air cells was digitally scanned, traced and analysed. The mean surface area of the mastoid air cell system was 167.0 cm2 and ranged from 74.78 to 330.01 cm2. The volume was also measured, the mean being 10.43 cm3 ranging from 6.25 to 20.52 cm3. The correlation coefficient between surface area and volume was 0.95. These results indicate that well pneumatized mas

On the quenching of excited electronic states of molecular nitrogen in nanosecond pulsed discharges in atmospheric pressure air
Moon Soo Bak, W. Kim, Mark Cappelli
SJR Q1Applied Physics Letters

Emission measurements are carried out to study the quenching of excited electronic states of nitrogen, N2∗, in nanosecond pulsed discharges in atmospheric pressure air and nitrogen. The results reveal that ground state N2 quenches N2(C) and N2(B) at rates less than dissociative quenching by ground state O2 by a factor of 4 and 2.5, respectively. Kinetic simulations with the inferred quench rates indicate that the dissociative quenching of N2∗ by O2 is responsible for 82% of atomic oxygen product
