Professor Myung Il Bae's research lab specializes in perioperative medicine, with a focus on predicting and optimizing surgical outcomes through biomarkers and nutritional status assessment. The lab investigates the prognostic value of preoperative laboratory markers—such as serum albumin, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score—in high-risk surgical populations, including those undergoing cardiac, vascular, and oncologic surgeries. Their work also explores the neurophysiological effects of anesthetic agents, such as remimazolam, using EEG parameters and bispectral index monitoring to assess sedation depth and drug response. The overarching goal is to improve risk stratification and guide personalized perioperative care.

12BACKGROUND: The changes in hypnotic indicators in remimazolam sedation remain unclear. We investigated the correlation of the electroencephalogram (EEG) parameters with the effect-site remimazolam concentration and the depth of sedation in patients receiving a target-controlled infusion of remimazolam. METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled 35 patients (32 analyzed) who underwent lower extremity varicose vein surgery or lower extremity orthopedic surgery under spinal anesthesia.

Preoperative serum albumin levels were an independent predictor of 1-year mortality after the graft replacement of ascending aorta and aortic arch. These findings underscore that the optimization of patients' nutritional status before surgery may be warranted and should be further explored in this high-risk population.
In OPCAB patients, preoperative NLR and delta-NLR were significantly associated with DAOH 90, and delta-NLR was an independent risk factor for long-term mortality, indicating their role in risk assessment, which is essential for perioperative management.
