研究室紹介

Professor Namju Kim's research lab specializes in ophthalmic pathology and molecular ophthalmology, with a focus on inflammatory orbital diseases, ocular oncology, and the molecular mechanisms underlying rare orbital disorders. The lab investigates clinical features, signaling pathways (such as Sonic hedgehog and Wnt), and cancer stem cells in eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma, while also exploring immune-modulating effects of probiotics in ocular and systemic immunity. Recent work integrates machine learning for clinical assessment of thyroid-associated orbitopathy, highlighting a translational approach combining clinical ophthalmology with biomedical data science.

Clinical Features of Ocular Motility in Idiopathic Orbital Myositis
Min Seok Kang, Hee Kyung Yang, Namju Kim, Jeong‐Min Hwang
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Objective: To elucidate the clinical features of ocular motility and the risk factors for recurrence in idiopathic orbital myositis. METHODS: The medical records of 31 patients diagnosed with idiopathic orbital inflammation between 2003 and 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were initially treated with corticosteroids. Treatment outcome and ocular motility were noted. RESULTS: Twenty-six patients (84%) had unilateral involvement and five patients (16%) were bilateral. Of the 31 pat

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Although the clinical activity score (CAS) is a validated scoring system for identifying disease activity of thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO), it may produce differing results depending on the evaluator, and an experienced ophthalmologist is required for accurate evaluation. In this study, we developed a machine learning (ML)-assisted system to mimic an expert's CAS assessment using digital facial images and evaluated its accuracy for predicting the CAS and diagnosing active TAO (CAS ≥ 3). Cancer Stem Cell Markers in Eyelid Sebaceous Gland Carcinoma: High Expression of ALDH1, CD133, and ABCG2 Correlates With Poor Prognosis
Namju Kim, Ho-Kyung Choung, Min Joung Lee, Sang In Khwarg, Ji Eun Kim
SJR Q1Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science

Development of metastasis in eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma might be attributed to increased number of CSCs or acquisition of dedifferentiated phenotype. Our findings suggest that CSCs are involved in the disease progression of eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma, and in particular, expression of ALDH1 is a predictor of a poor outcome.

Expression of Shh and Wnt Signaling Pathway Proteins in Eyelid Sebaceous Gland Carcinoma: Clinicopathologic Study

SJR Q1Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual ScienceOA

PURPOSE: Activation or dysregulation of the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and Wnt signaling pathways is suggested to lead to the development of many human malignancies. In this study, we investigated Shh and Wnt signaling protein expression in eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma, and analyzed their correlation with clinical characteristics of the tumor. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgical resection of eyelid sebaceous gland carcinoma from 1999 to 2011 were recruited for the study. Immunohistochemical s

Comparison of Clinical and Radiological Findings between Congenital Orbital Fibrosis and Congenital Fibrosis of the Extraocular Muscles
Namju Kim, Hee Kyung Yang, Jae Hyoung Kim, Jeong‐Min Hwang
SJR Q2Current Eye Research

Purpose/Aims: To compare the clinical and radiological findings of the two rare entities of congenital orbital fibrosis and congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles (CFEOM). Materials Methods: Clinical characteristics and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of three congenital orbital fibrosis patients were analyzed and compared to 13 CFEOM patients. Results: In all three patients with congenital orbital fibrosis, unilateral EOM limitation and enophthalmos were found with a retrobulb

Modulatory Activity of Bifidobacterium sp. BGN4 Cell Fractions on Immune Cells
김남주, 지근억

Bifidobacteria has been suggested to exert healthpromoting effects on the host by maintaining microbial floraand modulating imune functions in the human intestine. Weassessed modulatory effects of the diferent cel fractions ofBifidobacterium sp. BGN4 on macrophage cells and otherimmune cells from the spleen and Peyer’s patches (PP) ofmouse. Cell free extracts (CFE) of the BGN4 fractions inducedand increased the phagocytic activity more effectively thanother fractions in the mouse peritoneal cell

Pediatric orbital wall fractures: Prognostic factors of diplopia and ocular motility limitation
Yung Ju Yoo, Hee Kyung Yang, Namju Kim, Jeong‐Min Hwang
SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

Presence of muscle incarceration and retrobulbar hemorrhage, horizontal length of floor fracture, supraduction limitation, and time interval from trauma to first visit were correlated with the surgical outcomes in pediatric orbital wall fracture patients. These results strengthen that the soft tissue damage associated with bony fracture affects the orbital functional unit. When managing children with orbital wall fracture, meticulous physical examination and thorough preoperative computed tomogr

IgG4-related ophthalmic disease involving extraocular muscles: case series
Namju Kim, Hee Kyung Yang, Jae Hyoung Kim, Jeong‐Min Hwang
SJR Q2BMC OphthalmologyOA

IgG4-ROD usually shows normal ocular motility despite extraocular muscle enlargement, which is the key distinguishing feature from other orbital inflammatory diseases. Active flare-up with increased serum IgG4 levels may produce a large angle of eye deviation, but mostly respond well to steroid treatment.

S-1–Induced Lacrimal Drainage Obstruction and Its Association with Ingredients/Metabolites of S-1 in Tears and Plasma: A Prospective Multi-institutional Study

SJR Q1Cancer Research and TreatmentOA

LDO is a frequent adverse event during S-1 chemotherapy. An older age, decreased Ccr, and high plasma 5-fluorouracil concentration were found to be independent risk factors for LDO. The high incidence of LDO warrants regular ophthalmologic examination and early intervention in patients receiving S-1 therapy.

SJR Q2BMC CancerOA

BACKGROUND: Trastuzumab emtansine (Kadcyla®, T-DM1) is an antibody-drug conjugate used to treat HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) overexpressing metastatic breast cancer. In this report, we present the first case of lacrimal drainage system stenosis identified after T-DM1 administration, and its successful treatment with a topical steroid. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old female with metastatic breast cancer was referred for excessive tearing of both eyes. She previously underwent

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between the bony nasolacrimal duct (NLD) size and outcomes of nasolacrimal silicone intubation for incomplete primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO). METHODS: Patients who underwent silicone intubation for incomplete PANDO and had undergone facial computed tomography (CT) were included. Surgical success was judged by both epiphora improvement and normalized tear meniscus height (TMH; < 300 μm) on anterior segment optical coherence tomograph

Background: We previously developed a machine learning (ML)-assisted system for predicting the clinical activity score (CAS) in thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO) using digital facial images taken by a digital single-lens reflex camera in a studio setting. In this study, we aimed to apply this system to smartphones and detect active TAO (CAS ≥3) using facial images captured by smartphone cameras. We evaluated the performance of our system on various smartphone models and compared it with the p
