研究室紹介

Professor Nan-Sook Yoo's research lab focuses on the intersection of communication, health behavior, and cultural influences, with a strong emphasis on how message framing and cultural values—particularly individualism and collectivism—affect preventive health behaviors and psychological well-being. The lab also investigates media representations of stigmatized conditions such as autism spectrum disorder and the impact of discrimination on Asian American communities during public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the lab explores digital communication technologies, including social media platforms like WeChat, and their role in shaping well-being among older adults. A growing area of interest involves the integration of building information modeling (BIM) and simulation tools to enhance energy-efficient building design through improved data interoperability.

Benefits for Me or Risks for Others: A Cross-Culture Investigation of the Effects of Message Frames and Cultural Appeals
Nan Sook Yu, Fuyuan Shen
SJR Q1Health Communication

This study examined the effects of message frames when they were culturally tailored. Focusing on one aspect of culture-individualism and collectivism-the study discovered some similar patterns across cultures: The effect of message framing in motivating preventive behaviors could be moderated by the cultural values embedded in the messages. Messages focusing on individualistic gains and collectivistic losses successfully increased people's intention to adopt preventive behaviors. Practical and

Computing in Civil Engineering

Energy Efficient Building (EEB) design requires many simulation tools to support making decisions for optimized building solutions, resulting in frequent interactions between computational tools. Building Information Modeling (BIM) server platforms can support the storage, maintenance, and query of IFC-based building information models. However, the lack of a unified interface to support information exchange and interoperability among different building design and simulation tools has become a b

Getting connected while aging: the effects of WeChat network characteristics on the well-being of Chinese mature adults
Jian Raymond Rui, Nan Sook Yu, Qian Xu, Xi Cui
SJR Q1Chinese Journal of Communication

We Chat is one of the most popular social media applications, ranking fifth globally. Drawing on the socioemotional selectivity theory, this study investigated the usage of WeChat among Chinese aged 50–80 years in 68 cities across the country. This study is the first to examine the effects of the characteristics of the WeChat network on users’ psychological well-being (PWB) and subjective well-being (SWB). The results of the online survey (N = 506) suggested that making strong connections on WeC

Autism in the media: A longitudinal study of stigma cues and framing of attribution
Nan Sook Yu, Laura C. Farrell
SJR Q2Newspaper Research Journal

This study examined 16 years of newspapers’ presentation of a prominent health issue, autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The presence of attribution of autism and stigma cues in national and local newspapers were particularly focused on. Our results illuminated intriguing trends regarding how newspapers have framed the attribution of autism and how various stigma cues have been chosen by national and local newspapers to identify autistic individuals over time. We suggest that given the evolving med

Information Interoperability between Building Information Modeling Authoring Tools and Simulation Tools to Support Energy Efficient Building Design
Nan Sook Yu

Effective Energy Efficient Buildings (EEB) design requires the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) design authoring tools, along with various simulation tools to support decision making for optimized building solutions. This requires frequent interactions between computational tools. Traditionally, people have been using a point-to-point model for data exchange between those tools, which is complex and inefficient. An integrated data-centric model can reduce the communication cost and imp

SJR Q3International Journal of Vehicle Systems Modelling and Testing

Good vehicle handling characteristics are essential to ensure traffic safety. While the handling behaviour of cars has been well investigated, there is a scarcity of such studies on transit buses. This paper analyses the steady-state and transient responses of a typical 12-metre transit bus. Tests were conducted at The Pennsylvania Transportation Institute (PTI) test track and included constant radius cornering, step steer and continuous sinusoidal steer. The test bus was found to show good tran
