Professor Noh Young Seok's research lab specializes in dermatological conditions with a focus on atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and inflammatory skin diseases, particularly in the Korean population. The lab investigates patient-reported outcomes, quality of life, and treatment-seeking behaviors to improve clinical management and patient-centered care. It also explores non-invasive cosmetic interventions such as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for skin rejuvenation and examines complications like tinea incognito resulting from inappropriate topical steroid use.

15Quantification of quality of life (QOL) related to disease severity is important in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD), because the assessment provides additional information to the traditional objective clinical scoring systems. To document the impact of AD on QOL for both children and adults as well as to quantify the relationship with disease severity, QOL assessments were performed over a 6-month period on 415 patients with AD. A questionnaire derived from the Infants’ Dermatitis Quality o
Background: Psoriasis is an immune-mediated, chronic inflammatory disease affecting multiple aspects of patients’ lives. Its epidemiology varies regionally; however, nationwide epidemiologic data on psoriasis depicting profile of Korean patients has not been available to date. Objective: To understand nationwide epidemiologic characteristics and clinical features of adult patients with psoriasis visited university hospitals in Korea. Methods: This multicenter, non-interventional, cross-sectional
Background: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment has recently emerged in response to the increasing demand for noninvasive procedures for skin lifting and tightening. Objective: This study was aimed at evaluating the clinical efficacy of and patient satisfaction with HIFU treatment for wrinkles and laxity in seven different areas of the face in Asian skin. Methods: Twenty Korean patients with facial wrinkle and laxity were analyzed after a single session of HIFU treatment. Two inde
Tinea incognito (TI) is a dermatophytic infection which has lost its typical clinical appearance because of improper use of steroids or calcineurin inhibitors. The incidence of TI is increasing nowadays. We conducted retrospective review on 283patients with TI from 25 dermatology training hospitals in Korea from 2002–2010to investigate the demographical, clinical, and mycological characteristics of TI,and to determine the associated risk factors. More than half (59.3%) patients were previously t
Little is known about the treatment-seeking behaviors of acne patients, especially Asian acne patients. This study was performed to obtain detailed information about the treatment-seeking behaviors in Korean acne patients. Patients who visited the dermatology departments at 17 university hospitals completed a self-administered questionnaire. Most patients obtained information about acne from doctors or the Internet. The most important criteria for selecting a treatment method or choosing a parti
Background: Interplay of numerous constitutional and precipitating factors are involved in the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). Most of these etiologic factors are not controllable, but barrier dysfunction can be managed. Correction of barrier abnormalities has been accepted as a first-line therapy with effective anti-inflammatory therapy. Objective: We wished to establish standardized skin care guidelines for Korean patients who suffer from atopic dermatitis. Methods: The skin care guidel

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an idiopathic inflammatory process characterized by proximal muscle weakness and cutaneous lesions, such as the Gottron’s sign, heliotrope rash, and erythematous photosensitive rash. Administration of systemic agents for the treatment of underlying systemic diseases leads to remission of the cutaneous lesions in many cases. However, cutaneous lesions may remain refractory to treatment. Pimecrolimus is a calcineurin inhibitor with combined anti-inflammatory and immunomodul
Background: Chronic hand eczema (CHE) tends to be refractory to conventional therapy. Previous clinical trials have found that a 24-week treatment course of oral alitretinoin is effective and well tolerated for CHE treatment. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of oral alitretinoin in Korean CHE patients. Methods: A total of 27 patients with moderate to severe CHE took 30 mg of alitretinoin daily for 12 weeks. The primary efficacy parameter was the physici
Plexiform schwannoma is a rare benign neoplasm of the neural sheath characterized by a multinodular plexiform growth pattern. The tumor usually occurs as an isolated finding, although rare cases have been reported in association with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). A 25-year-old man was admitted for foot drop. He had an asymptomatic skin-colored nodule on his neck that had been present for 10 years. His medical history included local excision of a plexiform schwannoma on his left leg in our derm
"Fiddler's neck" is an irritant contact dermatitis that frequently affects violin and viola players. The etiology of the skin changes associated with this condition are probably attributable to a combination of factors--including increased pressure, friction, poor hygiene, and excessive perspiration. Clinically, the lesions generally consist of a localized area of lichenification on the left side of the neck just below the angle of the jaw. Herein, we report a case of fiddler’s neck in a viola p
Background: Providing an educational program as part of ahealth care program for the management of atopic dermatitis(AD) patients has rapidly become popular. AD educationalprograms can be of benefit in measured outcomes for bothdermatology specialists and patients. Objective: To determinethe effects of programmed education delivered bydermatology specialists on the management and knowledgeof AD, we assessed the effectiveness of patient/parentaleducation at improving AD knowledge, and determined
