Professor Park Hoonki's research lab specializes in biomedical engineering and health informatics, focusing on wearable physiological monitoring systems, motion artifact reduction in photoplethysmography (PPG), and the development of machine learning models for rapid, accurate triage in emergency settings. The lab integrates multi-sensor PPG technology with advanced signal processing techniques such as independent component analysis (ICA) and singular value decomposition to enhance the reliability of vital sign measurements. Additionally, the lab explores clinical decision support systems, including consciousness indices and survival prediction models, to improve pre-hospital and mass casualty triage outcomes.

Motion Artifact Reduction in Wearable Photoplethysmography Based on Multi-Channel Sensors with Multiple Wavelengths
Jongshill Lee, Minseong Kim, Hoon-Ki Park, In Young Kim
SJR Q1SensorsOA

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an easy and convenient method by which to measure heart rate (HR). However, PPG signals that optically measure volumetric changes in blood are not robust to motion artifacts. In this paper, we develop a PPG measuring system based on multi-channel sensors with multiple wavelengths and propose a motion artifact reduction algorithm using independent component analysis (ICA). We also propose a truncated singular value decomposition for 12-channel PPG signals, which cont

In a mass casualty incident, the factors that determine the survival rate of injured patients are diverse, but one of the key factors is the time for triage. Additionally, the main factor that determines the time of triage is the number of medical personnel. However, when relying on a small number of medical personnel, the ability to increase survivability is limited. Therefore, developing a classification model for survival prediction that can quickly and precisely triage via wearable devices w

SJR Q1BMC Medical EducationOA

BACKGROUND: An important barrier to smoking-cessation counseling for physicians is a lack of education at the undergraduate level. Interactive methods such as peer role-play (RP) or modules utilizing standardized patients (SPs) may be effective for medical students to enhance their performance on tobacco cessation counseling. This study compared the effectiveness of a module using SPs to that of a RP module for undergraduate medical students on tobacco cessation counseling. METHODS: This study w

Kye‐Yeung Park, Hoon-Ki Park, Hwan‐Sik Hwang
SJR Q1Public Health NutritionOA

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal obesity is associated with obesity-related health risks regardless of body weight. The present study aimed to determine whether alcohol drinking pattern is associated with abdominal obesity in normal-weight, middle-aged adults. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study using complex sampling design analyses. SETTING: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2008 to 2013. SUBJECTS: Normal-weight participants aged 40-69 years with BMI of 18·5-25

In addition to the traditional MCQ test, National Medical Licensing Examination Board(NMLEB) will introduce clinical skills assessment as an independent exam for MD qualification in 2009. The clinical skills test will evaluate six procedural skills and six clinical problems by using OSCE and CPX. The validity and reliability of the test should be established by continuing effort from experts and efficient administration. The test may change the curriculum of clinical education in many medical sc

E valuation systems can produce curricular change. Korean medical schools face a new responsibility to prepare students for the Korean Medical Licensing Examination (KMLE) clinical skills test (CST) that had been administered since 2009. Several innovations in medical education have resulted, including augmentation of hand-on skills training and a standardized patient program during clerkships. This review explored the results of a survey of 41 medical schools on the impact of the CST on medical

SJR Q1BMC Medical EducationOA

BACKGROUND: No validated tool is available to assess patients' perception of physician empathy in Korea. The objective of this study was to establish a Korean version of the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) measure-originally developed in English and widely used internationally-and to examine its reliability and validity. METHODS: The CARE measure was translated into Korean and tested on 240 patients from one secondary care hospital and one tertiary care hospital in Korea. Internal con

SJR Q1LifeOA

Traditionally, sarcopenia has defined as amount of absolute muscle mass adjusted by height in the elderly people. However, relative muscle mass adjusted by weight has been used extensively in most non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) studies. Here, we attempted to investigate the pitfall of adjusted muscle mass by weight to evaluate association between sarcopenia and NAFLD. Adult subjects (n = 1343) who underwent a health check-up were finally included for analysis. The weight-adjusted skel

Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases

We administered both the rapid antigen test and real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test to 2154 patients in order to assess the diagnostic value of the rapid antigen test during Korean pandemics of H1N1 2009. The overall sensitivity was 70.0%, specificity was 97.5%, positive predictive value was 97.4%, and negative predictive value was 71.2%. The sensitivity fell and the negative predictive value decreased as the RT-PCR positive rate increased.

Hoon-Ki Park, Oh Jung Kwon
SJR Q2Korean journal of medical educationOA

Purpose: During the high-stake examinations such as OSCE (Objective structured clinical examination) or CPX (clinical performance exam), test security is generally accepted as a major concern for test validity. This study was conducted to investigate the effect on examinee's scores of repeated, serial administrations of essentially the same standardized patient (SP)-based performance exam.
