研究室紹介
Professor Park, Joo-Young's research lab specializes in thyroid cancer molecular biology, focusing on the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying follicular and papillary thyroid carcinomas. The lab investigates driver mutations (e.g., BRAF, RAS, TERT promoter), fusion genes, and their prognostic implications for risk stratification and clinical decision-making. Additionally, the lab explores dental stem cell therapy for periodontal regeneration, particularly in challenging apical root defects, highlighting translational regenerative medicine. Their work bridges molecular oncology and regenerative medicine with a strong emphasis on clinical translation.

15Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and benign follicular adenoma (FA) are indistinguishable by preoperative diagnosis due to their similar histological features. Here we report the first RNA sequencing study of these tumors, with data for 30 minimally invasive FTCs (miFTCs) and 25 FAs. We also compared 77 classical papillary thyroid carcinomas (cPTCs) and 48 follicular variant of PTCs (FVPTCs) to observe the differences in their molecular properties. Mutations in H/K/NRAS, DICER1, EIF1AX, IDH1,
Abstract Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) and advanced differentiated thyroid cancers (DTCs) show fatal outcomes, unlike DTCs. Here, we demonstrate mutational landscape of 27 ATCs and 86 advanced DTCs by massively-parallel DNA sequencing, and transcriptome of 13 ATCs and 12 advanced DTCs were profiled by RNA sequencing. TERT , AKT1 , PIK3CA , and EIF1AX were frequently co-mutated with driver genes ( BRAF V600E and RAS ) in advanced DTCs as well as ATC, but tumor suppressors (e.g., TP53 and CDKN2A
BACKGROUND: Recent reports suggest that mutations in the promoter of the gene encoding telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) affect thyroid cancer outcomes. METHODS: In all, 551 patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) enrolled in this study. The median follow-up duration was 4.8 years (interquartile range, 3.4-10.6 years). RESULTS: TERT promoter mutations were detected in 25 DTCs (4.5%): 2.8% in neither BRAF-mutated nor RAS-mutated tumors, 4.8% in BRAF-mutated tumors, and 11.3% in RA
Objectives: To determine the impact of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) on the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality, a comprehensive meta-analysis was performed according to the age or coexisting CVD risk status of the participants. Methods: Studies regarding the association of SCH with all-cause mortality from PubMed and Embase databases were included. The pooled relative risk (RR) of CVD and all-cause mortality was calculated using the Mantel–Haenszel method. A subgroup
Coexistent BRAFV600E and TERT promoter mutations have a synergistic effect on clinical outcomes in PTC, whereas each mutation alone has a modest effect. Therefore, molecular testing of BRAFV600E and TERT promoter mutations together is useful in assessing risk stratification of PTC.
BACKGROUND: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and higher levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) have been proposed as risk factors for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), but this issue is still being debated. The purpose of this study was whether HT was related to the risk of PTC over TSH. METHODS: We enrolled 1329 patients (1028 with PTC, 52 with follicular thyroid cancer, and 249 with benign disease) of 1490 patients who underwent thyroidectomy. RESULTS: The TSH concentration was not different am
Our meta-analysis suggests that PFASs are negatively associated with total T4, and their effect can be different depending on the PFAS concentration.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely used endocrine disruptor. Recent epidemiologic results have suggested an association between exposure to BPA and cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. We investigated the in vivo effects of long-term oral exposure to BPA on insulin resistance and glucose intolerance. In the present study, 4- to 6-week-old male mice on a high-fat diet (HFD) were treated with 50 μg/kg body weight per day of BPA orally for 12 weeks. Long-term oral exposure to BPA along
In recent decades, attention has been directed toward the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) on human health. BPA has estrogenic activity and is regarded as a representative endocrine disruptor. In addition, mounting evidence indicates that BPA can disrupt thyroid hormone and its action. This review examined human epidemiological studies to investigate the association between BPA exposure and thyroid hormone levels, and analyzed <i>in vivo</i> and <i>in vitro</i> experiments to identify the causal rel
BACKGROUND: Distant metastasis, generally to lung and bone, is rare in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) and the prognosis is still elusive. We investigated long-term outcomes of lung metastasis in DTC patients and its prognostic factors. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 4572 patients who underwent surgery for DTC from 1962 to 2009 at Seoul National University Hospital. Among them, 164 patients were identified with lung metastasis and 152 patients were enrolled in the final
The objective of this study was to examine the polymorphism in the cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) gene and its relationship with autoimmune thyroid disease in Koreans. Polymorphism in the promoter and exon 1 of CTLA-4, clinical symptoms of disease and thyrotropin receptor antibody (TSHRAb) characteristics were analyzed. Polymorphism was detected using restriction fragment length polymorphism and polymerase chain reaction amplification of genomic DNA. All subjects were Korean (97 Grave
The distinction between benign and malignant thyroid tumors is critical for the management of patients with thyroid nodules. We applied immunohistochemical staining for galectin-3, HBME-1, cytokeratin 19 (CK19), high molecular weight cytokeratin (HMWCK), cyclin D1 and p27(kip1) in 295 thyroid lesions to determine their diagnostic accuracy. The expression of all markers was significantly associated with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). The sensitivity for the diagnosis of DTC was 94.7% wit
The findings of this meta-analysis suggest a significant association between the exposure of DEHP metabolites and the function of the HPT axis.
Background: Active surveillance (AS) is an alternative to thyroidectomy for the management of low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC). However, prospective AS data collected from diverse populations are needed. Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study enrolled patients from three referral hospitals in Korea. The participants were self-assigned into two groups, AS or immediate surgery. All patients underwent neck ultrasound every 6–12 months to monitor for disease progression.
