6Two floc-forming, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, strains EMB43(T) and EMB61, obtained from activated sludge of a domestic wastewater treatment plant in Korea, were characterized. The two strains were very closely related, sharing 99.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and showing a level of DNA-DNA relatedness of 93 %, which suggests that they represent members of a single species. A Gram-negative, strictly aerobic, non-spore-forming bacterium, designated strain BD-c194(T), was isolated from diesel-contaminated soil in Geoje, Korea. The cells were short, motile rods with single polar flagella. Growth of strain BD-c194(T) was observed between 15 and 45 degrees C (optimally at 30-35 degrees C) and between pH 6.0 and 9.5 (optimally at pH 7.5-9.0). Since fire blight was first discovered in Korea in 2015 on pears and apples, the agrochemicals containing streptomycin, oxolinic acid, and oxytetracycline as the main agents have been used as fire blight control agents. Since these antibiotics can easily produce resistant bacteria, the efficacy of kasugamycin soluble liquid (SL), which is not yet registered in Korea, against fire blight in apples during the flowering period was verified to supplement these agents. This study investigated the temporal progression of bakanae disease in three susceptible rice cultivars: Odae, Junam, and Chucheong. Although higher initial seed infection rates increased final disease incidence, the dynamics of symptom development were distinctly cultivar-dependent. Chucheong was characterized by a high proportion of tiller death in the early stages, followed by an increase in latency.
