Professor Pey-Yan Liou's research lab focuses on educational psychology and science learning, with a strong emphasis on student motivation, self-concept, and self-regulation in science and technology education. The lab investigates how instructional practices, such as inquiry-based and teacher-directed methods, influence science achievement and attitudes, particularly within the context of large-scale international assessments like TIMSS and PISA. A central theme is the application of expectancy-value theory and the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE) model to understand motivational dynamics across different grade levels and gender groups. The lab also develops and validates instruments to measure students’ motivation and self-regulation in technology learning, especially among senior high school students in Taiwan.

This study examines the Noyce Program, which provides scholarships for STEM majors in return for teaching in high need schools. The perceptions of 555 scholarship recipients were investigated using hierarchical cluster analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and Rasch analysis to determine how the scholarship influenced their commitments to teaching in high need schools.
