Professor Ran Sook Chang's research lab specializes in microvascular reconstructive surgery, with a focus on complex soft tissue reconstruction following trauma, burns, and oncologic resections. The lab emphasizes innovative free flap techniques—particularly thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flaps—for extremity and facial reconstruction, as well as advancements in breast reconstruction and facial rejuvenation using novel biomaterials. Research also addresses the long-term complications of chronic burn scars, including malignancy, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and intervention. The lab integrates clinical innovation with patient-centered outcomes, aiming to improve both functional and aesthetic results in reconstructive surgery.

Chronic burn scars often cause various skin malignancies at rates of up to 2%. These lesions are usually squamous cell carcinomas, but rarely, malignant melanoma is reported. We report a 67-year-old male with a malignant melanoma on a burn scar with regional metastasis. This patient presented an ulcerative lesion only in 2 weeks.
