Professor Sang Chul Bae's research lab focuses on rheumatological and autoimmune diseases, with a strong emphasis on understanding and improving outcomes in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and osteoarthritis. The lab investigates the impact of lifestyle interventions—particularly t'ai chi—on physical function, bone health, and fall prevention in older adults with arthritis. It also explores nutritional strategies, including antioxidant supplementation, to modulate disease activity and oxidative stress in autoimmune conditions. Additionally, the lab is dedicated to cultural adaptation and validation of patient-reported outcome measures, such as the Korean version of the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), to enhance clinical assessment in Korean populations.

15A recent study in the North American White population has documented the association of a common STAT4 haplotype (tagged by rs7574865) with risk for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus. T'ai chi increased knee extensor muscle endurance and bone mineral density in older women with osteoarthritis, and decreased their fear of falling during daily activities. Further study with long-term follow-up is needed to substantiate the role of t'ai chi exercise in the prevention of fall and its related fracture.
Dietary supplementation of antioxidants at 900 mg/day for 4 weeks did not change the blood biomarkers of inflammation and disease severity of RA patients under conventional medical treatments. Further considerations for dose-response relationships, duration of supplementation, and susceptible biomarkers are required.
OBJECTIVE: The Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) is a widely used, easily administered functional scale that has high reliability and validity. Mammalian Toll-like receptors (TLR) play an important role in both adaptive immunity and innate immunity. Genetic variations within TLR genes are known to be associated with a variety of inflammatory and infectious diseases. TLR9 is potentially associated with autoimmune diseases, because it participates in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the maturation of dendritic cells. We investigated the association of four TLR9 gene polymorphisms (-1486 T>C, -1237 C>T, +1174 A>G and +2848
