Professor Sang-Mok Lee's research lab specializes in advanced materials and optical communication systems, with a strong focus on polymer blends for sustainable materials and high-capacity optical access networks. The lab investigates the thermal, rheological, and mechanical behaviors of biodegradable polymer composites such as PLA/PBSA blends, aiming to develop eco-friendly materials with tailored properties. Concurrently, the lab pioneers innovative passive optical network (PON) technologies, particularly wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM and DWDM) systems using wavelength-locked Fabry-Pérot laser diodes to enable long-reach, high-capacity, and energy-efficient fiber-optic communication. The integration of statistical manifold-based image analysis further extends their work into intelligent signal processing and pattern recognition.

Characterization and processing of Biodegradable polymer blends of poly(lactic acid) with poly(butylene succinate adipate)

We investigated thermal, rheological, morphological and mechanical properties of a binary blend of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate adipate) (PBSA). The blends were extruded and their molded properties were examined. DSC thermograms of blends indicated that the thermal properties of PLA did not change noticeably with the amount of PBSA, but thermogravimetric analysis showed that thermal stability of the blends was lower than that of pure PLA and PBSA.
