Professor Sanghyun Ahn's research lab specializes in vascular and interventional radiology, focusing on peripheral arterial disease, endovascular interventions for aorto-iliac and lower extremity vascular diseases, and the management of vascular complications in patients with comorbid conditions such as coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and renal transplantation. The lab investigates clinical outcomes, risk factors, and long-term patency following endovascular procedures, with particular attention to patient-specific factors like access site selection, comorbidities, and vascular access-related complications such as coronary steal syndrome. The research also explores the prevalence and risk factors for deep vein thrombosis post-kidney transplantation in the Korean population, contributing to evidence-based prophylaxis strategies in Asian patients.

Additionally, the influence of the access site and the clinical outcomes were analyzed. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2014, data from 39 patients with 45 chronic iliac artery stenosis and/or occlusion who were treated with endovascular treatment were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: The procedure time wa
This prospective study surveyed the prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in Korean patients with coronary arterial disease (CAD) or cerebrovascular disorder (CVD). From March 2010, 576 hospitalized patients in cardiovascular or stroke center were enrolled as the study group. Ankle-brachial index (ABI) was measured and the cut-off point for diagnosing PAD was ≤ 0.9 at rest. A total of 424 hospitalized patients in the Department of Surgery and aged ≥ 50 yr was enrolled as the control gr
OBJECTIVE: Ipsilateral arteriovenous fistula (AVF) may cause symptoms of coronary steal in patients who had undergone coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) using internal thoracic artery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the adverse effects of ipsilateral AVF to CABG, including the incidence of coronary steal, and to analyze the risk factors for coronary steal. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2013, a total of 25 patients undergoing hemodialysis via upper extremity AVF, ipsilateral to the preexi

BACKGROUND: Synchronous cancer in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) increases morbidity and mortality after AAA repair. However, little is known about the impact of the history of cancer on mortality after AAA repair. METHODS: Patients with intact AAA who were treated with endovascular aneurysm repair or open surgical repair were selected from the Health Insurance and Review Assessment data in South Korea between 2007 and 2016. Primary endpoints included the 30- and 90-day mortality
BACKGROUND: The incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after kidney transplantation (KT) and the risk factors are still unknown in Korean patients. Determining the need for appropriate DVT prophylaxis is difficult when considering the low incidence of DVT in the Asian population. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of DVT occurring 3 months after KT, the DVT occurrence pattern, and risk factors in Korean patients. METHODS: Data from a total of 393 patients who underwent KT fr
This study has shown that the adequate positioning of RFA catheter tip (2.0-2.5 cm) is recommended to decrease the incidence of EHIT.
Patients aged < 20 years had more rapid disease progression to end-stage renal disease and a higher recurrence rate after transplant than patients aged ≥ 20 years. If patients aged ≥ 20 years progress rapidly from progressive symptoms to renal replacement therapy, renal transplant may be considered after 24 months because of high recurrence risk.
Our study shows that when the needle is inserted at the apex of the anatomical triangle directed towards the ipsilateral nipple, it crosses the IJV at 16°. Since the common carotid artery is usually medial to the IJV, directing the needle towards the ipsilateral nipple seems to be a safe way to avoid the common carotid artery and successfully puncture the IJV.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of erythropoietin (Epo) on both acute and chronic limb ischemia (ALI and CLI) and to evaluate the differences in mechanisms according to the method of Epo administration. Hindlimb ischemia was made in BALB/c mice with femoral artery ligation. The mice were divided into four groups: Group 1 (control, no treatment), Group 2 (ALI, early multiple doses), Group 3 (ALI, early single high dose), Group 4 (CLI, late multiple doses). Blood flow ratio sig
Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is now considered the first choice treatment modality for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) treatment. Advocates for endovascular strategies will try to treat all AAA by EVAR, regardless if the anatomy is conducive for treatment or not. However, the long-term outcomes of EVAR outside the instructions for use (IFU) due to a hostile aneurysmal neck or iliac artery anatomy are known to be poor. The EVAR procedures can be classified according to the technical diffic
