Professor Sang-min Park's research lab focuses on the long-term health impacts of common medical exposures, particularly antibiotics, diabetes, and metabolic disorders, with a strong emphasis on population-based cohort studies using large-scale national health databases. The lab investigates causal relationships between pharmaceutical exposures—such as antibiotics and metformin—and chronic diseases including diabetes, dementia, lung cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and cardiovascular conditions. A central theme is understanding the interplay between microbiota, systemic inflammation, and disease progression through rigorous epidemiological methods. The lab also explores how environmental factors like air pollution interact with lifestyle behaviors and pharmacological treatments in disease risk modulation.

Numerous studies have reported that antibiotics could lead to diabetes, even after adjusting for confounding variables. This study aimed to determine the causal relationship between antibiotics use and diabetes in a nationally representative cohort. This retrospective cohort study included adults aged 40 years or older who were enrolled in the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort. Antibiotic exposure was assessed from 2002 to 2005 and newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus

Background: The possible relation between antibiotic exposure and the alteration of gut microbiota, which may affect dementia risk, has been revealed. However, the association between antibiotics and dementia incidence has rarely been studied. We aimed to determine the association between antibiotic exposure and the risk of dementia. Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study used data from the National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS) in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Although recent studies indicated that antibiotics may be a risk factor for lung cancer, further understanding is needed. We investigated the association of long-term antibiotic exposure with lung cancer risk. METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study investigated 6,214,926 participants aged ≥ 40 years who underwent health screening examinations (2005-2006) from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. The date of the final follow-up was December 31, 201

SJR Q1Allergology InternationalOA

BACKGROUND: The association of allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis with Parkinson's disease (PD) risk is yet unclear. In the few preceding studies, a short follow-up duration was followed for a relatively small study population, and lifestyle behaviors were not adjusted for. Therefore, there is a need for large-scale observation studies on the association of allergic disease with PD risk after considering lifestyle behaviors. METHODS: The study population c

SETTING: Tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) remain global health concerns. Metformin has recently received attention for its anti-tuberculosis effects.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of TB development in elderly DM patients treated with metformin compared with sulfonylureas.DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service-Senior database. The participants were type-2 DM (T2DM) patients aged ≥60 years between 1 January 20

OBJECTIVES: Several studies suggest that antibiotic use may affect overall cancer incidence, but the association between antibiotics and prostate cancer is still unclear. This retrospective cohort study aimed to assess the association between antibiotics and the risk of prostate cancer. METHODS: A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Korean National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database. 1 032 397 individuals were followed up from January 1, 2007, to December 31

Background Sedentary behavior elevates cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in patients with dyslipidemia. Increasing physical activity (PA) is recommended alongside pharmacological therapy to prevent CVD, though benefits across environmental conditions are unclear. Methods and Results We analyzed data from 113 918 newly diagnosed patients with dyslipidemia (2009–2012) without prior CVD, sourced from the Korea National Health Insurance Service. INTRODUCTION: Given the shortage of pharmacogenetic studies on treatment response according to subtype of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), we investigated the associations between the MspI and DraI polymorphisms of the alpha-2 A-adrenergic receptor gene (ADRA2A) and treatment response to methylphenidate according to subtype of ADHD. METHODS: We enrolled 115 medication-naïve children with ADHD into an open label 8-week trial of methylphenidate. The participants were genotyped and

Reversal of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease among Korean
Yun Hwan Oh, Seogsong Jeong, Sun Jae Park, Joseph Ahn, Sang Min Park
SJR Q3MedicineOA

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. However, the association between changes in NAFLD status and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains uncertain. Starting January 1, 2013, participants were followed until the occurrence of CVD event, death, or December 31, 2020. This was a population-based cohort study that included data from adults aged ≥ 20, who underwent 2 consecutive health screenings from

AIM: Various subcategories for steatotic liver disease (SLD) were proposed globally. Previous studies suggested a heightened risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) with prolonged antibiotic exposure and metabolic dysfunction-associated SLD (MASLD), respectively. This study investigates the impact of antibiotic usage on CVD in MASLD patients. METHODS: From the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, 276 520 adults aged 40 and older were included. Antibiotic exposure was defined by the c

Introduction: It is known that biological risk factors and lifestyle behaviors are important determinants of dementia. However, there has been yet to be sufficient evidence to prove that community-level social capital is one of the determinants of dementia. This retrospective cohort study is a large, long-term, population-based study that investigated the association between community-level social trust and the risk of dementia in the Republic of Korea. Abstract Recent studies elucidate that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) patients may face a higher risk of cardiovascular complications. This study aimed to evaluate association of COVID‐19 with the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This nationwide population‐based retrospective cohort study included Korean adult citizens between January 2021 and March 2022 from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency COVID‐19 National Health Insurance Service cohort.
