Professor Say Young Kim's research lab specializes in bilingual and multilingual reading processes, with a focus on how morphological structure, orthographic transparency, and language modality influence word recognition and cross-language activation. The lab investigates the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying Korean as a first language (L1) and its effects on second (L2) and third language (L3) reading, particularly in multilinguals. Key research directions include masked priming, neural representational similarity, and the time course of morphological and cross-linguistic processing in Korean-English and Korean-Chinese trilinguals.

Abstract Korean has a unique status compared to other alphabetic orthographies in terms of its phonology-orthography mapping and visual-orthographic configuration. In this chapter we reviewed recent literature on the neural bases of reading in Korean L1 to understand whether and how the characteristics of Korean orthography are reflected in the brain network. We then reviewed recent neuroimaging literature concerning the L1 effect on L2 reading with Korean L1. Evidence suggests that when reading
