研究室紹介

Professor Seo-kyeong Shin's research lab focuses on innovative teaching and learning environments, particularly in online and flipped classroom settings. The lab investigates how instructional design, such as scaffolding strategies, feedback types, and collaborative processes, influences student engagement, problem-solving skills, and self-efficacy. A central theme is the promotion of deep learning through inquiry-based and socioscientific inquiry models, with an emphasis on knowledge construction and sustainable online communities for educators. The lab also explores the role of learners’ epistemological beliefs and collaborative dynamics in shaping learning outcomes.

Effects of different types of instructor comments in online discussions
Kyungbin Kwon, Su Jin Park, Suhkyung Shin, Chae Young Chang
SJR Q1Distance EducationOA

The current study examined the effects of different types of instructor comments on student engagement in an online discussion. In particular, this study examined three comment types: (1) praise-oriented comments, agreeing with students’ initial messages and recapping their ideas, (2) elaboration-encouraging comments, requesting elaboration on the initial messages, and (3) perspective-widening comments, suggesting different or thought-provoking opinions responding to the initial messages. Finding the optimal scaffoldings for learners’ epistemological beliefs during ill-structured problem solving
Suhkyung Shin, Hae‐Deok Song
SJR Q1Interactive Learning Environments

This study investigates how scaffolding type and learners’ epistemological beliefs influence ill-structured problem solving. The independent variables in this study include the type of scaffolding (task-supported, self-monitoring) and the student's epistemological belief level (more advanced, less advanced). The dependent variables include three components of problem-solving skill (problem representation, solution development, monitoring and evaluation). The two-way multivariate analysis of vari

Designing and Implementing Web-Based Scaffolding Tools for Technology-Enhanced Socioscientific Inquiry
Suhkyung Shin, Thomas Brush, Krista Glazewski
SJR Q1Educational Technology & SocietyOA

Introduction Inquiry-based learning (IBL) has long been considered important for promoting the understanding and retention of concepts, skills and attitudes that are required for solving ill-structured problems. Recently, socioscientific inquiry (SSI) has been emphasized as a curricular model that engages students in scientific topics while considering associated ethical or social issues. In SSI, students develop their understanding of fundamental aspects of science through a question-driven and

Collaborative Learning in the Flipped University Classroom: Identifying Team Process Factors
Suhkyung Shin, Kyungbin Kwon, Jiyoon Jung
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

The purpose of this study was to examine how team process factors relate to students’ self-efficacy, attitude, and learning satisfaction in flipped learning. Since lone-wolf students tend to have little patience for the group work process and exhibit a lack of organizational commitment, this study also explores how students’ preferences for collaborative work or individual work affect their self-efficacy, attitude, and learning satisfaction in a flipped classroom. The participants were thirty-fo

SJR Q1Interactive Learning EnvironmentsOA

This study examined the types of learning behaviors students demonstrated while performing inquiry tasks. It also explored the relationship between the learning behaviors and students’ domain knowledge. We observed fourteen students in five groups during a ninth-grade biology course. Three types of learning behaviors (inquiry, collaborative, and minimally productive behaviors) were identified and time on each type was measured. The results suggest that students demonstrated different patterns ac

A Sociological View on Designing a Sustainable Online Community for K–12 Teachers: A Systematic Review
Dabae Lee, Jiyoon Jung, Suhkyung Shin, Anne Ottenbreit‐Leftwich, Krista Glazewski
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

As a way to support teachers’ professional development activities and build communities of practice for teachers, education researchers and practitioners have put considerable effort into building an online learning community for K–12 teachers to create a venue to facilitate teachers’ joint knowledge construction. However, a substantial number of such online communities have failed due to lack of participation of members. Therefore, it is critical to understand how to design a sustainable commun

Parental involvement in digital home-based learning during COVID-19: an exploratory study with Korean parents
Hyo‐Jeong So, Suhkyung Shin, Yao Xiong, Hye‐Ran Kim
SJR Q1Educational Psychology

Despite the significant shift to home-based learning (HBL) during the COVID-19 pandemic, little is known about the process for parental involvement in and satisfaction with digital HBL. Based on Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s model of parental involvement, this exploratory study proposed and tested a model that includes (a) motivational beliefs for involvement, (b) life context, and (c) digital parenting styles and digital media self-efficacy as contributors to parental involvement behaviours in d

테크놀로지 활용 교육정책의 현황과 과제: 토픽모델링을 중심으로
최예림, 신서경
http://dx.doi.org/10.15833/KAFEIAM.28.3.681
