研究室紹介
Professor Seok-Chae Rhee's research lab specializes in second language acquisition, with a strong focus on L2 pronunciation, suprasegmental features, and learner corpus development. The lab investigates phonetic and phonological challenges faced by Korean learners of English and foreign learners of Korean, particularly in areas such as consonant clusters, aspiration, and suprasegmental features affecting intelligibility. It also develops large-scale, publicly accessible learner corpora—such as the Korean-Spoken English Corpus (K-SEC) and a large-scale Korean learner corpus—to support evidence-based language teaching and materials development.

This paper aims to describe and analyze the errors produced by foreign learners of Korean language with its focus on several major Korean phonological rules such as tensification, reduction of consonant cluster in coda, resyllabification and so on. The foreign learners as the subjects of the analysis are composed of 54 English native speakers, 36 Chinese and 35 Japanese native speakers and their task was to read 300 Korean words. The analysis shows that there exists a consistent correlation betw
This study investigates the role of suprasegmental features with respect to the intelligibility of Korean-spoken English judged by Korean and English raters as being good or bad. It has been hypothesized that Korean raters would have different evaluations from English native raters and that the effect may vary depending on the types of suprasegmental factors. Four Korean and four English native raters, respectively, took part in the evaluation of 14 Korean subjects’ English speaking. The subject
Design and Construction of Korean-Spoken English Corpus (K-SEC)Seok-Chae Rhee, Sook-Hyang Lee, Seok-keun Kang, Yong-Ju LeeK-SEC (Korean-Spoken English Corpus) is a kind of speech database that is being under construction by the authors of this paper. This article discusses the needs of the K-SEC from various academic disciplines and industrial circles, and it introduces the characteristics of the K-SEC design, its catalogues and contents of the recorded database, exemplifying what are being cons
This study, first, shows that the distribution of three acoustic cues, i.e., frication noise time, rise time, aspiration time, used for contrast of two Korean fricatives /ㅅ/ and /ㅆ/, is dependent on the positions where /ㅅ/ and /ㅆ/ are placed. The finding is that, while aspiration time is crucial in distinction of the two fricatives in the word-initial positions, both frication noise time and rise time play a role in contrasting the two sounds in the word-medial positions. This implies that diffe
This study investigates Korean learners’ pronunciation of English liquids /r/ and /l/ depending on the phonological context that /r/ or /l/ occurs, and shows the correspondences between the students’ English pronunciation level and accuracy of liquid pronunciation. Words that contain liquids were extracted from the rated Korean spoken English speech corpus and divided into five different phonological environments; word initial, word initial cluster, word medial, word final, word final cluster po
Based on the text type list and CohMetrix analysis, this study aims to compare text difficulty and genres of reading passages in 10th Grade English textbooks which are being used in Asian countries (Korea, China, Singapore, and India). Each textbook is looked through 14 indices under 7 categories in CohMetrix. These indices indicated that Singaporean textbooks had the top scores in text difficulty, followed by Korean textbooks. Second, according to the 7 categories of text genres, Korean textb
This paper attempts to analyze the characteristics of Korean vowel production by 12 Korean native speakers and 36 adult learners. The analyses have been performed with investigations of F1 and F2 values. Results showed that there's no significant difference between /ㅔ/ and /ㅐ/ and between /ㅗ/and /ㅜ/ in Korean native speakers' pronunciations. The distinguishing tendencies found in the analyses of foreign learners' pronunciations are fronting and lowering of /ㅗ/ by English speakers, backing and he
This study has been quantitatively conducted on the basis of the corpus of the colloquial speeches preferred by students. For this study I have transcribed phonological structures of the colloquial speeches from the corpus containing over 100,000 words, the contents of which have then been analyzed by computer in accordance with an established analysis tool. To make a brief introduction, it has been disclosed that the most favored sound in Korean speech is CV type. In the study on the frequent
This study aims to establish a speech corpus for Korean as a foreign language (L2 Korean Speech Corpus, L2KSC) and to examine the aspects of the foreign learners acquisition of the phonetic and phonological systems in the Korean Language. L2KSC will be established through the processes of reading list organizing, recording, and slicing. The expectation is that this project will provide significant bases for a variety of fields such as Korean education, academic research, and technological develo
The current study examines the use of shell nouns in argumentative essays written by Korean EFL college writers. Shell nouns are a group of abstract nouns that require lexical realization in order to establish full meaning of the nouns. Fact, problem and reason are the representative items of shell nouns. Using a corpus-based method, this study analyzes shell nouns in EFL written production in terms of cohesive devices. The result indicates that both the total frequency of shell nouns and the us
Stressed vowels in English are usually produced using longer duration, higher pitch, and greater intensity than unstressed vowels. However, many English as a foreign language (EFL) learners have difficulty producing English lexical stress because their mother tongues do not have such features. In order to investigate if certain non-native English speakers (Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese-Chinese native speakers) are able to produce English lexical stress in a native-like manner, speech samples w
Various L2 studies claim that measuring suprasegmentals is an effective way to evaluate L2 oral fluency. Our study seeks to find the most affecting suprasegmentals to assess the oral fluency. To meet this purpose, this study has proceeded in two steps. First, five raters (2 natives and 3 Koreans) rated 3,069 unrated Korean elementary students’ read speech from Korean-Spoken English Corpus. They evaluated the data and rated them into 5 fluency levels based on Genie Corpus Rubric (Level 5 is the m
