Professor Seung Beom Han's research lab specializes in orthopedic biomechanics and regenerative medicine, with a primary focus on knee osteoarthritis and lower limb alignment correction. The lab investigates surgical interventions such as high tibial osteotomy (HTO) and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA), emphasizing alignment accuracy, soft tissue laxity, and long-term outcomes. It also explores regenerative therapies, including hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich plasma, and mesenchymal stem cell injections, for osteoarthritis treatment. Additionally, the lab examines metabolic and developmental impacts of environmental toxins, such as lead, on maternal and fetal health.

15PURPOSE: Open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) cannot always accurately correct limb alignment, resulting in under- or over-correction. This study assessed the relationship between soft tissue laxity of the knee joint and alignment correction in open-wedge HTO. METHODS: This prospective study involved 85 patients (86 knees) undergoing open-wedge HTO for primary medial osteoarthritis. The mechanical axis (MA), weight-bearing line (WBL) ratio, and joint line convergence angle (JLCA) were measured
PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical effects of hyaluronic acid (HA), steroids, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), or adipose mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) injections in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: Randomized controlled trials with OA of the knee that compared HA, steroids, PRP, adipose MSC, or their combination with placebo or in head-to-head combination were identified from the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases up to June 30, 2019. We perfor
Millions of women of child-bearing age have substantial bone lead stores due to lead exposure as children. Dietary calcium ingested simultaneously with lead exposure can reduce lead absorption and accumulation. However, the effects of dietary calcium on previously accumulated maternal lead stores and transfer to the fetus have not been investigated. We studied the effects of lead exposure of female rats at an early age on fetal development during a subsequent pregnancy. We gave 5-week-old female
There were no significant differences in the revision rate to TKA between HTO and UKA. However, results from subgroup analyses suggested that opening-wedge HTO resulted in a lower revision rate to TKA than did UKA, whereas closing-wedge HTO resulted in a higher revision rate to TKA than did UKA. In addition, UKA resulted in significantly better functional outcomes and postoperative velocity, along with less postoperative pain, fewer postoperative complications, and lower postoperative ROM. Based
PURPOSE: To determine whether navigation-assisted intraoperative lower limb alignment in open wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) correlates with preoperative and postoperative radiographic alignment. METHODS: This prospective study involved 35 patients (39 knees) who underwent navigation HTO for primary medial osteoarthritis. The mechanical axis (MA) and weight-bearing line (WBL) ratio were calculated from preoperative radiographs, intraoperative navigation, and postoperative (6 months) radiograp
This study demonstrated that early postoperative hypoalbuminaemia is an independent risk factor for the development of postoperative pneumonia in patients undergoing hip fracture surgery.
Patients desire less pain and faster recovery of range of knee motion after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). While minimal invasive surgery (MIS) TKA appears to meet these needs, concerns exist regarding component malpositioning. Navigation systems can reduce the incidence of component misalignment. The present prospective randomized study compared limited medial parapatellar (LMPP) and mini-midvastus (MMV) approaches in 30 patients who had bilateral simultaneous primary TKAs. Each patient underwe
Acute kidney injury was found to occur frequently after surgery for femur neck fracture. Surgeons should be aware of acute kidney injury when planning the management of patients with femoral neck fracture and consider that the duration of intraoperative hypotension is a risk factor for acute kidney injury.
PURPOSE: This meta-analysis was designed to evaluate the effects of computer navigation on blood conservation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) by comparing postoperative blood loss and need for allogenic blood transfusion in patients undergoing computer navigation and conventional primary TKAs. METHODS: Studies were included in this meta-analysis if they compared change in haemoglobin concentration before and after surgery, postoperative blood loss via drainage or calculated total blood loss,
BACKGROUND: Postoperative pneumonia (POP) is a devastating complication that can frequently occur after hip fracture surgery. This study aimed to quantitatively and comprehensively summarize the risk factors for POP following hip fracture surgery. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched for studies assessing risk factors for POP following hip fracture surgery. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) between patients with and without PO
