研究室紹介
Professor Seung Joo Kang's research lab focuses on the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying chronic diseases, particularly in diverse populations. The lab investigates the role of genetic variants, including SNPs and CNVs, in anthropometric traits and cardiovascular disease risk, with a strong emphasis on underrepresented populations such as African-derived groups. Additionally, the lab explores the protective effects of endogenous molecules like bilirubin in atherosclerosis and examines the impact of infections—such as *Helicobacter pylori*—on metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders, including functional dyspepsia and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The research integrates epidemiological, clinical, and translational approaches to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

15Genome-wide association (GWA) studies have identified common variants that are associated with a variety of traits and diseases, but most studies have been performed in European-derived populations. Here, we describe the first genome-wide analyses of imputed genotype and copy number variants (CNVs) for anthropometric measures in African-derived populations: 1188 Nigerians from Igbo-Ora and Ibadan, Nigeria, and 743 African-Americans from Maywood, IL. To improve the reach of our study, we used imp
Bulk laxative, osmotic laxative, stimulant laxative with or without fiber, and other medications can be used in elderly patients in short-term within 3 months with reasonable safety. However, the quality of included studies was not high and most of studies was conducted in a small number of patients. Among these laxatives, polyethylene glycol seems to be safe and effective in long-term use of about 6 months in elderly patients.
This review highlights the protective roles of bilirubin against the atherosclerotic process. Bilirubin belongs to the superfamily of tetrapyrrolic compounds formed during heme catabolism. Although for decades bilirubin was considered to be a harmful waste product, recent epidemiologic studies have shown that serum bilirubin levels have consistently been inversely associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), as well as cardiovascular risk factors such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes. These c
Background: Previous studies on the effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication on functional dyspepsia (FD) are conflicting. We performed a comprehensive meta-analysis on this issue according to region and prevalence of H. pylori. Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effect of eradication of H. pylori on functional dyspepsia up to December 2018 were searched through PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library. Subgroup analyses by the outcome measure, region, and prevalence of
We investigated the relationship of H. pylori stratified by cytotoxin-associated gene A (cagA) status with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the general population of the United States (US). We utilized the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1988 to 1994 in this study. NAFLD was defined by ultrasonographic detection of hepatic steatosis in the absence of other known causes of liver diseases and significant alcohol consumption. Hepatic steatosis was assessed by
Besides clinical and radiologic findings, ascitic fluid ADA measurement is helpful in the differential diagnosis of TBP and PC.
PURPOSE: To investigate the association between insomnia and the risk of various cancers using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent a national health examination in 2009 were followed-up until 2018. Newly-diagnosed cancers were collected one year after the baseline. Insomnia was defined as having a diagnosis of F510 or G470 within one year prior to enrollment. The incidence of various cancers was compared between patients with and w
Background Alcohol may increase gastric cancer risk. Alcohol can be more carcinogenic in persons who possess inactive ALDH2 . The aim of this meta‐analysis was to evaluate whether ALDH2 polymorphism can affect alcohol‐induced gastric carcinogenesis. Methods We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases to identify relevant articles published between January 2000 and September 2019. Eligible articles were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data were analyzed usin
Gastritis is a disease characterized by inflammation of the gastric mucosa. It is very common and has various classification systems such as the updated Sydney system. As there is a lot of evidence that Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with the development of gastric cancer and that gastric cancer can be prevented by eradication, H. pylori gastritis has been emphasized recently. The incidence rate of gastric cancer in Korea is the highest in the world, and due to the spr
Smoking and alcohol consumption are significant risk factors for early-onset GC in young Koreans. Further studies are needed to investigate sex-based impact of alcohol consumption and smoking on GC incidence in young individuals.
The ADR was stable according to the procedure order for the later procedures of the workday in a setting of moderate daily procedure volumes. The withdrawal time and experience level of the endoscopist were more important than the procedure order in detecting adenomas by colonoscopy.
Antithrombotic agents, including antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants, are widely used in Korea because of the increasing incidence of cardiocerebrovascular disease and the aging population. The management of patients using antithrombotic agents during endoscopic procedures is an important clinical challenge. The clinical practice guidelines for this issue, developed by the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, were published in 2020. However, new evidence on the use of dual antiplatel
