Professor Seung-pil Jeong's research lab focuses on translational oncology, with a primary emphasis on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying aggressive cancer behaviors and improving prognostic prediction in various malignancies. The lab investigates key factors such as tumor metastasis, lymph node involvement, and epigenetic alterations—particularly CDH1 gene hypermethylation—in breast, thyroid, and lymphoid cancers. Their work also explores the impact of treatment modalities like neoadjuvant chemotherapy on pathological outcomes and long-term survival, aiming to refine risk stratification and guide personalized therapeutic strategies.

15Our data suggest that patients with IPLC present with poor prognostic factors such as large tumor size, poor histologic grade and advanced stage at diagnosis. These aggressive clinicopathologic characteristics may result in poor clinical outcomes. Although our study could not link IPLC histology to poor prognosis, considering the aggressive characteristics of IPLC, early detection and considerate treatment, including proper surgical and adjuvant intervention, could be helpful for disease progres
BACKGROUND: Macroscopic extrathyroidal extension (ETE) is a poor prognostic factor in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, intraoperative inspection for ETE is often inaccurate and could lead the surgeon to misconstrue simple adhesion as gross ETE. Such confusion could result in more aggressive treatment than necessary. In the present study we investigated the frequency and clinical implication of simple adhesions. METHODS: We identified 858 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy for
Axillary nodal status is one of the most important prognostic factors in breast cancer. The lymph node ratio (LNR) has been suggested as an independent prognostic factor because the number of dissected and involved lymph nodes might differ across institutions. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) has been the preferred treatment method for reducing tumor mass in the breast and axillary area. However, NAC can reduce total number of excised lymph nodes compared with upfront surgery. Therefore, an emergi
This study suggests that hypermethylation of the CDH1 gene may play a pivotal role in the metastasis of the axillary lymph node and the breast cancer recurrence.
Primary breast lymphoma (PBL) is a rare disease, particularly in males. Diffuse large B cell lymphoma is the most common PBL, while follicular lymphoma is less common. Furthermore, primary follicular lymphoma of a male breast is rarely reported. We report a male patient with primary follicular lymphoma of the breast and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A 46-year-old man was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis secondary to chronic hepatitis B infection. Ten years later, he underwent segmentectomy of th
Most PBLs are B-cell origin, with DLBL being the most common histologic type. A combined treatment modality has been known to have positive effects on prognosis, and surgery should be limited to a diagnostic purpose.
In a previous validation of this nomogram based on American patients, nomogram-predicted IBTR rates were overestimated in the high-risk subgroup. However, our results based on Korean patients showed that the observed IBTR was higher than the predicted estimates in groups 3 and 4. This difference may arise from ethnic differences, as well as from the methods used to detect IBTR and the healthcare environment. IBTR! 2.0 may be considered as an acceptable nomogram in Korean patients with low- to mo
Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the breast is rare and there is scant information about the clinical behavior and treatment strategies. We report an adolescent female patient with metastatic RMS of the breast from the anus. An 18-year-old female patient was referred to our clinic due to palpable mass in the left breast. At age seven, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and treated with chemoradiation therapy. After 10 years of complete remission state, she presented with anal mass whic
Background: A surgical therapy for breast cancer, robot-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy (RANSM) has gained popularity because it may offer better cosmetic results than traditional nipple-sparing mastectomy (CNSM). Data regarding RANSM’s viability and security are still scarce, nevertheless. Comparing the surgical results of RANSM and CNSM in a single-center experience was the goal of this study. Methods: 57 patients who had nipple-sparing mastectomy procedures performed at our facility betwee
Dear Editor, Gastrointestinal metastasis from lung carcinoma is usually asymptomatic [1]. Due to the rarity of pleomorphic lung cancer, there have been only a few reports regarding symptomatic gastrointestinal metastasis from pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma [2], [3]. Herein, we report a case of recurrent intussusception caused by multiple metastases of pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, with the hope that our experience will aid readers in clinical decision-making. A 63-year-old male visited the e
