Professor Seung-woo Kim's research lab focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, infectious diseases, and tumor microenvironment biology. The lab investigates the pathophysiology of conditions such as dementia with Lewy bodies, melioidosis, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (MOGAD), with an emphasis on early diagnosis, treatment timing, and immune modulation. A key research direction involves understanding the role of microenvironmental components—particularly tumor-associated macrophages and metabolic mediators—in disease progression and therapeutic response. The lab also explores neuroprotective agents, such as tannic acid, for stroke and neurodegenerative disorders.

15Background: Transmission heterogeneity was observed during the 2015 South Korean outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection. Only 22 of 186 cases transmitted the infection, and 5 super-spreading events caused 150 transmissions. We investigated the risk factors for MERS-CoV transmission.
