研究室紹介

Professor Shinwoong Lee's research lab specializes in second language acquisition, with a primary focus on vocabulary knowledge, collocational competence, and writing proficiency among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The lab investigates how learners develop receptive and productive vocabulary size, the role of collocations in writing, and individual differences such as gender and proficiency level in reading and vocabulary strategies. Using both learner corpora and standardized tests, the lab explores the interface between vocabulary knowledge and second language writing performance, often comparing L2 learner data with native speaker corpora to identify developmental patterns and learning challenges.

Korean EFL University Students’ English Vocabulary Size and Their Writing Proficiency
이신웅

The purpose of the current study was two-fold. It was to measure the receptive and productive vocabulary size of Korean university students and to examine their English writing ability in relation to their productive vocabulary size. Ninety seven Korean EFL students at a university located in Seoul participated in the current study. Their vocabulary sizes were measured by the Receptive Vocabulary Size Test (RVST), an adapted version of Vocabulary Size Test (VST) (Nation & Beglar, 2007) and the P

L2 Collocational Knowledge by Congruency and Writing Proficiency of EFL University Learners
전유아, 이신웅

While less research has been conducted on the relationship between L2 collocational knowledge and L2 writing proficiency, the purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between L2 learners’ collocational knowledge and L2 writing ability. Areceptive collocation test, counterbalanced for incongruent and congruent collocations, and adjective-noun (AN) and verb-noun (VN)collocations, was developed by matchingnormalized frequencies of the collocation items from the Corpus of Contemp

L2 Reading Strategies and Gender: A Study of Korean EFL University Students
이신웅

The main purpose of the study is to investigate gender difference in the frequency and pattern of reading strategy use and to see if the gender difference exists, if any, across reading proficiency level. Four hundred sixty six university students who were enrolled in two Korean universities located in Seoul participated in the study. Two major instruments were utilized in the current study. First, the reading strategy survey adapted from Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS; Mokhtari & Sheorey 20

한국인 학습자와 영어 원어민의 구어 및 문어 코퍼스에나타난 개별 어휘 및 다어휘 표현 비교・분석
신동광, 전유아, 이신웅, 박명수

The present study aimed to compare English non-native speaker corpora vs. English native speaker corpora for the analysis of spoken and written English. Programs BNC-COCA 25000 RANGE and COCA_MWU20 ColloGram were used to analyze frequency and lexical variety of single words and multi-word units (MWUs) in each of the four corpora: Korean EFL learners’ spoken corpus and written corpus, BNC Spoken Sampler and BNC Written Sampler. The analysis of the four corpora demonstrated: First, the Korean lear

English Vocabulary Size of Korean University Students
이신웅

The purpose of the study is to measure the receptive English vocabulary size of Korean university students and to see if there is any difference in the size according to gender and year in college. Four hundred and sixty six students in two Korean universities participated in the study and their receptive vocabulary size was measured by an expanded and revised version of Vocabulary Levels Test (Schmitt, 2000; Schmitt et al., 2001). The results showed that the students' receptive vocabulary size

Computer-assisted classroom discussion in three esl classrooms: a case study of the experiences of a teacher and her students
Shinwoong Lee, Diane L. Schallert

The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of an ESL teacher and her students in computer assisted classroom discussion (CACD) and how these experiences were shaped and constructed. Thirty-four ESL students from two listening/speaking classes and one writing class enrolled in the English Language Program (ELP) affiliated with a large university in the U.S. and a teacher of those three classes participated. Main data sources included interviews with every student and the teacher, ob

Corpus-Based Vocabulary Analysis of Friends: Implications for Incidental Vocabulary Learning
이신웅

The primary purpose of the current study was bi-fold. It was to investigate what vocabulary size was necessary to comprehend Friends, one of the most popular American situation comedies, and to explore the number and percentage of potential words that might be incidentally learned through watching the program. The transcripts of two hundred twenty six episodes from Friends season one through ten were compiled and analyzed utilizing RANGE. It was found that the determined vocabulary sizes corresp

Korean ESL Learners’ Experiences in Computer Assisted Classroom Discussions
이신웅

The purpose of this study was to explore Korean ESL learners’ experiences in computer assisted classroom discussions. Data were collected from three ESL classes offered at a large U.S. university and 16 Korean ESL learners participated. There were four major findings of this study: (a) most participants (81.3%, 13 out of 16) did not believe that they could learn anything of value by participating in CACD sessions mainly due to the lack of discipline and order that they assumed were crucial for l

Semantic Prosody in Bilingual Dictionaries and EFL Learners’ Sentence Writings
이신웅

The purpose of the current study was bi-fold. First it was to examine how the semantic prosody of eight lexical items that had a specific semantic prosody were presented and explained in the six English-Korean bilingual dictionaries. In addition, it was to investigate how those lexical items were used in university students’ sentence writings in relation to semantic prosody. The result showed that the semantic prosodies of the lexical items were not adequately presented in the dictionaries in ge

Lexical Demand of Animation Movies and Vocabulary Learning Through Watching Them: A Corpus-Driven Approach
이신웅

The current study aimed to examine the lexical demand of 70 animation movies and measure the number of word families that could be learned incidentally through watching them, utilizing a corpus-driven analysis. It was found that learners should know about 2,000 word families to have 95% text coverage and about 5,000 word families to have 98% text coverage of the running words of the 70 animation movies. The vocabulary size necessary for understanding the animation movies was lower than that of A

The current study aimed to investigate the influence of L1 on the processing of L2 collocations utilizing a phrase-acceptability judgement task. The task was conducted on 39 English collocations with 21 native speakers of English and 45 Korean EFL learners. Their error rates and reaction times were measured both on the congruent collocations that have L1 translation equivalents and the incongruent collocations that do not have ones. It was found that the advanced EFL learners responded significa

Challenges of Using Corpora in Language Teaching and Learning: Implications for Secondary Education
이신웅

A number of advantages of using corpora in language teaching and learning have been identified by many corpus linguists and thereby its implementation into the language classroom has been highly recommended. However, the challenges and limitations of the use of corpora have not been extensively discussed, and without critically examining the use of corpora in language pedagogy it seems premature to urge teachers to use them in their classroom. In this vein, the purpose of the current paper is to
