研究室紹介
Professor Sik Namgong's research lab specializes in advanced wound healing and reconstructive surgery, with a focus on diabetic foot ulcers, biofilm-associated infections, and innovative soft tissue reconstruction. The lab investigates novel therapeutic strategies such as negative pressure wound therapy, tissue-engineered dermis, and micronized adipose tissue niche to improve healing outcomes. Key research directions include optimizing flap surgery techniques—particularly the anterolateral thigh, tensor fasciae latae, and reverse digital artery island flaps—and exploring anatomical alternatives like the cymba concha for cartilage grafting in Asian patients. The lab integrates clinical innovation with evidence-based approaches to enhance functional and aesthetic recovery in complex wounds and tissue defects.

15Diabetic foot ulcers are the main cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for major amputation in diabetic foot patients. Eight hundred and sixty diabetic patients were admitted to the diabetic wound centre of the Korea University Guro Hospital for foot ulcers between January 2010 and December 2013. Among them, 837 patients were successfully monitored until complete healing. Ulcers in 809 patients (96·7%) healed without majo
BACKGROUND: The anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap has become a predominant option in the field of reconstruction. However, some difficulties in harvesting flap exist due to the anatomical variability of the perforators. Reports have provided solutions for unreliable perforators. Although numerous cases that showed successful conversion to tensor fasciae latae (TFL) flap or anteromedial thigh (AMT) flap have been reported in the literature, none fully addresses the reliability of the perforators tha
Current treatment guidelines for biofilm-associated infections (BAI) recommend repeated sharp/surgical debridement followed by treatment with antimicrobial agents until the wound becomes self-sustaining in terms of a positive wound-healing trajectory. However, complete removal of a biofilm is unlikely, and biofilms reform rapidly. We have treated BAI in patients with chronic diabetic ulcers using a meshed skin graft combined with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) immediately after surgical
BACKGROUND: Management of skin and soft-tissue defects of the fingertips is functionally and aesthetically important, but controversial, especially when bones are exposed. Recent advances in wound healing technology allow the use of cells or biological dermis. The authors studied the clinical efficacy of tissue-engineered dermis grafts and artificial dermis grafts versus immediate reconstructive procedures, such as the reverse digital artery island flap, in treating bone-exposed fingertip defect
BACKGROUND: Septal extension grafting (SEG) is used for nasal tip projection and positioning. Often, insufficient quadrangular cartilage is available for grafting in Asians, and in most secondary cases the septum is already harvested. We utilized the folded cymba concha as an alternative for caudal SEG (CSEG) by modifying a tongue-in-groove technique. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical suitability of the cymba concha for CSEG and compare its outcomes with those of sep
Numerous studies have demonstrated the various properties of micronized adipose tissue (MAT), including angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative activities, which can be helpful in wound healing. This exploratory clinical trial aimed to report the efficacy and safety of MAT niche for treating diabetic foot ulcers. Twenty subjects were randomly divided into MAT niche treatment (n = 10) and control groups (n = 10). All patients were followed up weekly for 16 weeks. We evaluated the efficacy
Numerous studies have demonstrated the various medicinal properties of Panax ginseng, including angiogenic, immuno-stimulating, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities, which can be helpful in chronic wound healing. However, a direct role for P. ginseng in chronic wound healing has not been demonstrated. The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of P. ginseng extract on diabetic fibroblasts in vitro. Human diabetic fibroblasts were cultured in the presence of Ginsenoside Rb1
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of early hydrophilic polyurethane (EHP) foam dressing and highly hydrophilic polyurethane (HHP) foam dressing on wound healing in patients with diabetes. METHODS: Twenty patients with diabetes with skin graft donor sites on the lateral thigh were enrolled in this study. Each donor site was divided into two equal-sized areas for the application of HHP or EHP foam dressing. The study endpoint was the time required for healing, defined as complete epithelialization
INTRODUCTION: Maintaining adequate skin hydration is crucial in the feet of patients with diabetes because xerotic skin may crack and develop fissures, thereby increasing vulnerability to ulceration and infection. The nervous system is considered the powerhouse for maintaining adequate skin hydration; however, no clinical study has assessed the effect of the nervous system on skin hydration. In addition, it is hypothesized that microcirculation may play an important role in maintaining adequate
Microvascular free flap transfer has become a prevailing surgery with a failure rate of <5%. However, pedicle thrombosis occurs more frequently than indicated by the failure rate. This difference is due to the successful salvage of failing flaps. During exploration, thrombi are often encountered at anastomotic sites, whereas these causes could not explain vascular compromise in other patients. Thus, we hypothesized that thrombogenic processes might occur at remote sites, specifically within micr
Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is now more frequently used to improve tissue perfusion in ischemic diabetic feet. However, there are concerns about its feasibility and effectiveness in severely ischaemic feet. This study aimed to compare the perfusion values after PTA according to the ischaemic degree of diabetic feet. This study included 133 ischaemic diabetic feet. The foot transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO 2 ) and toe pressure were measured before the procedure and every secon
The therapeutic efficacy of a nanomedicine or a natural biomaterial can vary in different disorders due to their complex pathophysiology. A nanomedicine that is capable of not only targeting specific pathological cues through functional ligands but also optimizing the therapeutic efficacy of its components throughout the intricate pathways involved in complex disorders is highly desired. Here, ceria-nanoparticle-entangled reticulation for angiogenic and therapeutic embrocation (CERATE), composed
