研究室紹介

Professor So-Yeon Choi's research lab specializes in advanced electron microscopy and nanomaterials characterization, with a focus on atomic-scale structural analysis of two-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides. The lab develops cutting-edge machine learning techniques—particularly fully convolutional networks like ResUNet—to automate and enhance the interpretation of high-resolution STEM images, enabling rapid identification of defects and polymorphs. Additionally, the lab explores van der Waals epitaxial growth for assembling novel 2D heterostructures and investigates biomedical applications, including risk prediction in clinical radiology and emergency care techniques. The integration of computational methods with experimental materials science defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach.

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is an indispensable tool for atomic-resolution structural analysis for a wide range of materials. The conventional analysis of STEM images is an extensive hands-on process, which limits efficient handling of high-throughput data. Here, we apply a fully convolutional network (FCN) for identification of important structural features of two-dimensional crystals. ResUNet, a type of FCN, is utilized in identifying sulfur vacancies and polymorph types o

Van der Waals epitaxy on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) layered crystals has gained significant research interest for the assembly of well-ordered nanostructures and fabrication of vertical heterostructures based on 2D crystals. Although van der Waals epitaxial assembly on the hexagonal phase of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) has been relatively well characterized, a comparable study on the distorted octahedral phase (1T′ or Td) of TMDCs is largely lacking. Here, we investigate th

Objective:This study aims to identify the impact of social support on the relationship between loneliness and resilience for the elderly who are mentally sound, financially stable and living in a single household setting. Methods:A sample of 197 mentally healthy (Mini-Mental State Examination for Dementia Screening ≥-1.5 standard deviation and Geriatric Depression Scale <10) community-dwelling elderly 65 years of age or older was recruited. Multidimensional individual and interpersonal resilienc

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors of post-contrast acute kidney injury (PAKI) and the usefulness of the Mehran score for predicting PAKI in patients who underwent contrast-enhanced abdominopelvic computed tomography (CE-APCT) in the emergency department (ED). Methods: This was a retrospective observational study. Patients who underwent CE-APCT and had a follow-up creatinine test within 72 hours in the period January to June, 2017, were enrolled for the study. PAKI is de

A case of successful removal of a zipper entrapped on the upper eyelid of a child using a lidocaine gel
최소연, 황소연

Zipper entrapment injuries require a technique to safely and promptly release the entrapped tissues to prevent complications. Herein, we report an 8-year-old girl whose eyelid was successfully released from an entrapping zipper. She presented to the pediatric emergency department with her right upper eyelid entrapped in a zipper while getting dressed. She was distressed, anxious, and crying in pain. We have successfully removed the zipper using a lubricating gel, which provides local anesthesia.
