Professor So-yeon Shim's research lab focuses on neonatal health, particularly the neurodevelopmental and physiological challenges faced by preterm and very low birth weight infants. Key research directions include the impact of oxidative stress and brain microstructure alterations in preterm infants using advanced imaging techniques like diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), as well as clinical factors influencing feeding tolerance and morbidity. The lab also investigates sex-specific outcomes, parental involvement in infant development, and infectious disease patterns in neonatal intensive care units.

Paternal involvement is significantly associated with infant neurodevelopment during early infancy, and maternal parenting stress partially mediates that association. This result emphasizes the importance of fathers' involvement and mothers' parenting stress on early infant neurodevelopment.
Systemic illness signs such as feeding difficulty and neutropenia are specific for preterm infants with rotavirus infections.
