研究室紹介

Professor Sokjun Yoon's research lab specializes in population health and health economics, focusing on the burden of disease, health disparities, and the socioeconomic determinants of health. The lab conducts large-scale epidemiological studies using national health data to assess disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), disease prevalence, and economic impacts of major health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and infectious diseases. Key research directions include health policy evaluation, health system performance, and the application of sociodemographic indices (SDI) to understand regional and population-level health outcomes in South Korea and beyond.

Effect of Occupational Health and Safety Management System on Work-Related Accident Rate and Differences of Occupational Health and Safety Management System Awareness between Managers in South Korea's Construction Industry
Seok Joon Yoon, Hsing K. Lin, Gang Chen, Shinjea Yi, Jeawook Choi, Zhenhua Rui
SJR Q1Safety and Health at WorkOA

Both work-related accident and fatal accident rates were found to be significantly reduced by implementing OHSMS in this study. The differences of OHSMS awareness between site general managers and OHS managers were identified through a survey. The effect of these differences on safety and other benefits warrants further research with proper data collection.

This paper provides an overview of the Korean Burden of Disease (KBoD) study, which was the first such study to assess the national burden of disease using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in an advanced Asian country. The KBoD study generally followed the approach utilized in the original Global Burden of Disease study (GBD), with the exception of the disease classification and epidemiological data estimation methods used, and the relative weightings of disabilities. The results of the pr

SJR Q2BMC Musculoskeletal DisordersOA

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal diseases are becoming increasingly important due to population aging. However, studies on the economic burden of musculoskeletal disease in Korea are scarce. Therefore, we conducted a population-based study to measure the economic burden of musculoskeletal disease in Korea using nationally representative data. METHODS: This study used a variety of data sources such as national health insurance statistics, the Korea Health Panel study and cause of death reports generat

SJR Q1BMC Public HealthOA

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the dose-response relationship between alcohol consumption and CVD incidence, conducting a meta-analysis of studies focusing on residents from local communities. Further, we examined whether light to moderate alcohol consumption had a protective effect on CVD incidence through a sub-group analysis. METHODS: This study conducted a meta-analysis of the relationship between alcohol consumption and CVD incidence, selecting journals published up to December 2017. T

Subnational Burden of Disease According to the Sociodemographic Index in South Korea
Dun‐Sol Go, Young‐Eun Kim, Seok‐Jun Yoon
SJR Q2International Journal of Environmental Research and Public HealthOA

The sociodemographic index (SDI), a composite index per capita income, educational attainment, and total fertility rate in a country, can indicate whether the country's burden of disease varies depending upon its level of socioeconomic development. This study identified the subnational SDI and disease burden of South Korea based on the country's overall SDI, using national representative data. The burden of disease was measured using disability-adjusted life years (DALY) with an incidence-based

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

In 2010, ischemic heart disease was the leading cause of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) worldwide. More specially, the prevalence of acute myocardial infarctions (AMI) is increasing in the aged population as mortality decreases; South Korea is no exception. This study aims to examine the economic burden of AMI in the Korean population between 2007 and 2012. AMI-related costs were assessed from a societal perspective. A prevalence-based cost-of-illness framework was used for this analysis

Measuring the burden of major cancers due to smoking in Korea

SJR Q1Cancer ScienceOA

Morbidity and mortality are classically used to measure disease burden. However, the allocation of limited health-care resources demands an agreed rational allocation principle and, consequently, the setting of priorities is of considerable importance. We collected data from the national death certificate database, and the national health insurance claim database and life tables. Using this data, we calculated disability adjusted life year (DALY) and health life year (HeaLY) values for smoking-r

SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

BACKGROUND: This study compared comorbidity-related medical care cost associated with different types of cancer, by examining breast (N = 287), colon (N = 272), stomach (N = 614), and lung (N = 391) cancer patients undergoing surgery. METHODS: Using medical benefits claims data, we calculated Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and total medical cost. The effect of comorbidity on the medical care cost was investigated using multiple regression and logistic regression models and controlling for demo

SJR Q1BMC Health Services ResearchOA

BACKGROUND: Calculating the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) from medical records is a time-consuming and expensive process. The objectives of this study are to 1) measure agreement between medical record and claims data for CCI in lung cancer patients and 2) predict health outcomes of lung cancer patients based on CCIs from both data sources. METHODS: We studied 392 patients who underwent surgery for pathologic stages I-III of lung cancer. The kappa value was used to measure the agreement betwe
