研究室紹介
Professor Soo-Jeong Kim's research lab specializes in interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of cognitive linguistics, cultural semiotics, and neuroaesthetics. The lab investigates semantic development in early language acquisition, particularly focusing on demonstratives and deictic functions in infants. It also explores conceptual metaphors in Korean and Chinese, examining cross-linguistic and cross-cultural similarities and differences in domains such as beauty care, food, and war. Additionally, the lab conducts neurocognitive analyses of artistic expression, notably examining how neurological conditions like bipolar disorder influenced Vincent van Gogh’s evolving artistic style and emotional depth.

This study aims to catalogue the similarities and differences found in the conceptual metaphors in the Korean and Chinese languages in the sphere of beauty care. This study aims to perform a contrastive analysis of the semantic expansion of the adjective “spicy” in the Korean and Chinese. Words affiliated with the Korean “맵다” and “辣[là]” are objects of analysis. First, both the meanings of “맵다” and “辣” are expanded to include the sense of pain as they share the models of this spicy-painful taste in hot pepper and mustard. A major difference to be found is that “辣” is more flexible and expansive in its inclusion of the taste of hard liquor. Second, in bot
