Professor Soo-joon Park's research lab specializes in synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry, with a focus on the development of novel synthetic methodologies for complex molecular architectures, particularly fluorinated and sulfanyl-containing compounds. The lab pioneers strain-release functionalization strategies to access unique scaffolds such as pentafluorosulfanylated cyclobutanes and applies these methods to the asymmetric synthesis of bioactive natural products, including Cephalotaxus alkaloids. Additionally, the lab contributes to biomedical research by investigating molecular mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases and developing standardized interfaces for legacy healthcare devices, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach bridging chemistry, medicine, and health technology. The lab’s work spans from fundamental synthesis to translational applications in drug discovery and medical device integration.

An efficient strategy for the asymmetric synthesis of Cα-tetrasubstituted proline derivatives from proline has been established. A nitrogen-fused bicyclic system was devised to control the stereodynamics of proline. Through N-quaternizations with allylic electrophiles followed by [2,3]-rearrangements, the bicyclic proline system delivered enantioenriched Cα-tetrasubstituted prolines.
