研究室紹介

Professor Soo-min Lee's research lab focuses on urological and infectious disease research, with a strong emphasis on improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment outcomes in genitourinary conditions. The lab investigates medical imaging biomarkers—particularly in multiparametric MRI for prostate disorders—and explores the pathophysiology and management of persistent infections like tuberculosis. It also examines endourological interventions, such as shock wave lithotripsy and endodontic file durability in root canal therapy, aiming to optimize clinical protocols through evidence-based analysis.

Cytological and Transcript Analyses Reveal Fat and Lazy Persister-Like Bacilli in Tuberculous Sputum
Natalie J. Garton, Simon J. Waddell, Anna Louise Sherratt, Su‐Min Lee, Rebecca J. Smith, Claire E. Senner, Jason Hinds, Kumar Rajakumar, Richard A. Adegbola, Gurdyal S. Besra, Philip D. Butcher, Michael R. Barer
SJR Q1PLoS MedicineOA

As nonreplicating tubercle bacilli are tolerant to the cidal action of antibiotics and resistant to multiple stresses, identification of this persister-like population of tubercle bacilli in sputum presents exciting and tractable new opportunities to investigate both responses to chemotherapy and the transmission of tuberculosis.

Multiparametric MRI appearances of primary granulomatous prostatitis

SJR Q1British Journal of RadiologyOA

Objective: Radiological features of granulomatous prostatitis (GP) overlap with those of prostate adenocarcinoma. Identification of specific GP features may aid diagnosis. We aimed to evaluate the multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) features of GP. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 16 patients from a cohort undergoing mpMRI and transperineal sector-guided prostate biopsies between July 2012 and May 2017. Images were analysed for lesion location, shape, size, extracapsular extension, signal intensity

Optimisation of shock wave lithotripsy: a systematic review of technical aspects to improve outcomes
Su‐Min Lee, Neil Collin, Helen Wiseman, Joe Philip
SJR Q2Translational Andrology and UrologyOA

Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) remains an important treatment option for the management of upper urinary tract stones. The optimisation of certain technical principles can help to improve the results of SWL. We performed a systematic review based on preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) standards for studies reporting on technical aspects of SWL. A literature search was conducted on the PubMed database between January 1984 and November 2018 using 'shockwave lit

Within the limitations of this study, EdgeFile X7 and TRUShape files exhibit greater corrosive tendencies to NaOCl in vitro than BioRace, ProTaper, and VortexBlue files after prolonged immersion in 4% NaOCl. However, shorter immersion periods, which more closely approximate clinical conditions during single root canal therapy, may not show surface corrosion across all experimental groups.

Distal Ureter Management During Nephroureterectomy: Evidence from a Systematic Review and Cumulative Analysis
Su‐Min Lee, Alistair McKay, Nathan Grimes, Nkem Umez‐Eronini, Omar M. Aboumarzouk
SJR Q1Journal of Endourology

No prospective, randomized comparisons exist for distal ureterectomy at nephroureterectomy. In this analysis, patients undergoing BCE had more advanced disease burden compared with the transurethral group. Despite this, the BCE group had statistically lower intravesical and local/distant recurrence. Further prospective research should be encouraged to identify gold standard ureter management.

Diagnostic value of MRI-based PSA density in predicting transperineal sector-guided prostate biopsy outcomes

PURPOSE: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) density (PSAD) has potential to increase the diagnostic utility of PSA, yet has had poor uptake in clinical practice. We aimed to determine the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging-derived PSAD (MR-PSAD) in predicting transperineal sector-guided prostate biopsy (TPSB) outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Men presenting for primary TPSB from 2007 to 2014 were considered. Histological outcomes were assessed and defined as: presence of any cancer or si

Recent advances in the understanding and management of underactive bladder
Su‐Min Lee, Hashim Hashim
SJR Q1F1000ResearchOA

Underactive bladder (UAB) is an important and complex urological condition resulting from the urodynamic finding of detrusor underactivity. It can manifest in a wide range of lower urinary tract symptoms, from voiding to storage complaints, and can overlap with other conditions, including overactive bladder and bladder outlet obstruction. However, UAB continues to be poorly understood and inadequately researched. In this article, we review the contemporary literature pertaining to recent advance

Assessment of quality in urodynamics: Cough versus valsalva
Su‐Min Lee, Andrew Gammie, Paul Abrams
SJR Q1Neurourology and Urodynamics

INTRODUCTION: To ensure quality, the International Continence Society recommends asking the patient to cough every minute or 50 ml of infused volume. However, on occasions, it was noticed that if cough transmission was poor, Valsalva maneuvers could show pressure transmission was satisfactory. Hence, a study was designed to compare the two methods. METHODS: Cough and Valsalva maneuver pressures were compared in 40 patients, 20 consecutive men and 20 consecutive women, undergoing urodynamics at t

However, ENZ's low solubility and bioavailability significantly hinder the achievement of optimal therapeutic outcomes. In previous studies, a liquid self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (L-SNEDDS) containing ENZ was developed among various solubilization technologies. However, powder formulations that included colloidal silica rapidly formed crystal nuclei in
