研究室紹介

Professor Sue-Hyun Lee's research lab specializes in cognitive neuroscience and behavioral psychology, focusing on the neural mechanisms underlying memory formation, retrieval, and reconsolidation. The lab investigates how memories are dynamically updated through protein synthesis and degradation processes in the hippocampus and neocortex, using behavioral, neurochemical, and advanced neuroimaging techniques such as 7T fMRI and MVPA. A key focus is understanding the role of synaptic plasticity and neural representation in working memory and long-term memory, as well as the impact of sleep deprivation on cognitive control and memory consolidation. The lab also explores real-world human behaviors, such as self-gifting, through ethnographic interviews and big data analytics, linking psychological motivations to neural and behavioral outcomes.

Reactivated memory undergoes a rebuilding process that depends on de novo protein synthesis. This suggests that retrieval is dynamic and serves to incorporate new information into preexisting memories. However, little is known about whether or not protein degradation is involved in the reorganization of retrieved memory. We found that postsynaptic proteins were degraded in the hippocampus by polyubiquitination after retrieval of contextual fear memory. Moreover, the infusion of proteasome inhibi

The memory reconsolidation hypothesis suggests that a memory trace becomes labile after retrieval and needs to be reconsolidated before it can be stabilized. However, it is unclear from earlier studies whether the same synapses involved in encoding the memory trace are those that are destabilized and restabilized after the synaptic reactivation that accompanies memory retrieval, or whether new and different synapses are recruited. To address this issue, we studied a simple nonassociative form of

Multi-Voxel Decoding and the Topography of Maintained Information During Visual Working Memory
Sue‐Hyun Lee, Chris I. Baker
SJR Q1Frontiers in Systems NeuroscienceOA

The ability to maintain representations in the absence of external sensory stimulation, such as in working memory, is critical for guiding human behavior. Human functional brain imaging studies suggest that visual working memory can recruit a network of brain regions from visual to parietal to prefrontal cortex. In this review, we focus on the maintenance of representations during visual working memory and discuss factors determining the topography of those representations. In particular, we rev

SJR Q2Frontiers in NeuroscienceOA

Sleep deprivation is known to have adverse effects on various cognitive abilities. In particular, a lack of sleep has been reported to disrupt memory consolidation and cognitive control functions. Here, focusing on long-term memory and cognitive control processes, we review the consistency and reliability of the results of previous studies of sleep deprivation effects on behavioral performance with variations in the types of stimuli and tasks. Moreover, we examine neural response changes related

Differential Representations of Perceived and Retrieved Visual Information in Hippocampus and Cortex
Sue‐Hyun Lee, Dwight J. Kravitz, Chris I. Baker
SJR Q1Cerebral CortexOA

Memory retrieval is thought to depend on interactions between hippocampus and cortex, but the nature of representation in these regions and their relationship remains unclear. Here, we performed an ultra-high field fMRI (7T) experiment, comprising perception, learning and retrieval sessions. We observed a fundamental difference between representations in hippocampus and high-level visual cortex during perception and retrieval. First, while object-selective posterior fusiform cortex showed consis

Is Reconsolidation a General Property of Memory?
Gayoung Kim, Minjae Kwon, Wonjun Kang, Sue‐Hyun Lee
SJR Q2Frontiers in Human NeuroscienceOA

Memory reconsolidation holds great hope for memory modification approaches and clinical treatments of mental disorders associated with maladaptive memories. However, it remains controversial as to whether reconsolidation is a general property of all types of memory. Especially, discrepancies have been reported in research focusing on whether declarative memory undergoes reconsolidation, and whether old memories can be reorganized after retrieval. Here, we discuss how these inconsistent results c

Strong correspondence between prefrontal and visual representations during emotional perception
Doyoung Park, Taehyun Kim, Sue‐Hyun Lee
SJR Q1Human Brain MappingOA

Emotion is thought to cause focal enhancement or distortion of certain components of memory, indicating a complex property of emotional modulation on memory rather than simple enhancement. However, the neural basis for detailed modulation of emotional memory contents has remained unclear. Here has been shown that the information processing of the prefrontal cortex differentially affects sensory representations during experience of emotional information compared with neutral information, using fu
