研究室紹介
Professor Sujeong Kim's research lab specializes in advanced optical communication systems and biomedical engineering, with a focus on improving signal integrity in fiber-optic transmission through novel photonic components such as semiconductor optical amplifiers and fiber gratings. The lab also conducts clinical and translational research in oral and maxillofacial surgery, particularly on tissue regeneration and healing following tooth extraction and temporomandibular joint disorders. A key theme across the research is the development of innovative solutions—both technological and biological—that enhance system performance and patient outcomes. The lab bridges photonics and biomedicine, exploring applications from ultrafast optical coding to inflammatory biomarkers and implant stability.

15Using a gain-saturated semiconductor optical amplifier, we have suppressed the intensity noise in spectrum-sliced incoherent light communication systems. A large increase has been achieved in the signal-to-noise ratio that is much better than previous results to our knowledge. Using this technique, we have transmitted a 0.36-nm bandwidth 2.5-Gb/s incoherent light signal over 20 km of conventional single-mode fiber without any dispersion compensation. The transmission penalty was 1.5 dB and the e
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of absorbable collagen sponge insertion in tooth extraction sites for socket healing of the impacted mandibular third molar. METHODS: Thirty-six patients with bilateral mandibular impacted third molars based on Pell-Gregory and Winter classification were included in this study. This study was a randomized clinical trial utilizing a split-mouth design with one side assigned as collagen sponge insertion and the other side assig
Interleukin-32 (IL-32) induces a variety of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. The IL-32 transcript was reported originally in activated T cells; subsequently, it was demonstrated to be abundantly expressed in epithelial and endothelial cells upon stimulation with inflammatory cytokines. IL-32 is regulated robustly by other major proinflammatory cytokines, thereby suggesting that IL-32 is crucial to inflammation and immune responses. Recently, an IL-32alpha-affinity column was employed in
All implants showed good primary stability at baseline in terms of insertion torque. The results of this study suggest that surface treatment may have significant effects on biological stability 3 weeks after implant placement. Further studies are needed to confirm these initial observations in poor quality bone.
BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis in children often leads to facial deformity, functional deficit, and negative influence of the psychosocial development, which worsens with growth. The treatment of TMJ ankylosis in the pediatric patient is much more challenging than in adults because of a high incidence of recurrence and unfavorable growth of the mandible. CASE REPORT: This is a case report describing sequential management of the left TMJ ankylosis resulted from trauma in earl
A novel, optical temporal encoding/decoding method is proposed and demonstrated. This can be accomplished by passing a short optical pulse through cascaded long-period fiber gratings. It has the advantages of constructing ultrafast codes and developing resistance to interferometric perturbations among the coded pulses. To verify the feasibility as a code generator, two types of codes are generated and compared with the predicted code patterns. In addition, to show an application for an optical c
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival, proliferation, and bone formation of dog mesenchymal stem cells (dMSCs) in the graft material by using Polycaprolactone-tricalcium phosphate (PCL-TCP), auto-fibrin glue (AFG), recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2), and dMSCs after a transplantation to the scapula of adult beagle dogs. Materials and Methods: The subjects were two beagle dogs. Total dose of rhBMP-2 on each block was 10 μg with 50 μg/mg concentration. T
Two cascaded semiconductor optical amplifiers are used to suppress the intensity noise of a spectrum-sliced incoherent channel with a bit rate as high as 10 Gbit/s for 2.6 nm channel bandwidth. The incoherent channel is transmitted over 100 km of dispersion-shifted fibre with a negative transmission penalty caused by intra-channel four-wave mixing.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) on the resolution of maxillary medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included 62 patients diagnosed with MRONJ in the maxillary posterior area with or without maxillary sinusitis (MS). All patients underwent oral surgery. The concomitant MS was evaluated, and if indicated, FESS was performed on the same operation. Follow-up included clinical and radiological examinatio
This study proposes and experimentally demonstrates a 10-Gb/s temporally coded optical code-division multiple-access system using bipolar modulation/balanced detection. For a proof-of-principle, two channels are constructed using one-stage ladder network. The interference noise channel is removed completely after balanced detection. It is shown that the proposed scheme has twice the eye opening compared with the system using single polarity. This increased eye opening can improve a receiver sens
BACKGROUND: Regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) is demonstrated to decrease regional bone mineral density and accelerate bone turnover. Hypothesizing that RAP can negatively affect the osseointegration of biomaterials, this study aimed to investigate the possible influence of the RAP on dental implant osseointegration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Orthognathic surgery, one of the major surgeries on oral and maxillofacial region was set as intervention for RAP. Considering that RAP exerts its physio
