Previously, we suggested that imatinib incorporation into conventional chemotherapy as an alternative (imatinib interim therapy) might be a useful strategy for bridging the time to allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) for newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph(+) ALL). A semiconductor optical amplifier-based all-optical read-only memory (ROM) is successfully demonstrated through simulations using a one-level simplification method optimized for optical logic circuits. Design details are presented, and advantages are discussed in comparison with an all-optical ROM-employing decoder. Seventy adults with acute promyelocytic leukemia were studied to clarify the significance of the level and kinetics of minimal residual disease (MRD) over their entire treatment course by realtime quantitative polymerase chain reaction. At a median follow-up of 44 months, nine relapses had occurred. The 5-year probabilities of relapse and disease-free survival were 17.3+/-5.4% and 81.5+/-5.4%, respectively.
