Professor Suk-Min Hong's research lab specializes in vestibular and otoneurological disorders, with a primary focus on the pathophysiology of dizziness, vertigo, and associated hearing impairments. The lab investigates vestibular system dysfunction using advanced diagnostic tools such as vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP), particularly in conditions like sudden sensorineural hearing loss, migrainous vertigo, and Meniere’s disease. A key research direction involves understanding the role of the saccular and otolith organs in both clinical and subclinical vestibular damage, especially in patients without overt vertigo. The lab also explores the psychological and sleep-related comorbidities in dizziness disorders, emphasizing the interplay between neurological, psychological, and sensory factors in patient outcomes.

15OBJECTIVE: Intratympanic (IT) dexamethasone offers a good method for avoiding systemic side effects in patients with sudden idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL). Abnormal VEMP rates in the vestibular neuritis, BPPV, and Meniere's disease groups were 36.6%, 25.8%, and 69%, respectively. The proportion of prolonged p13 latency in BPPV patients with abnormal VEMP responses was relatively high compared with the other two diseases. VEMP asymmetry in the patients with Meniere's disease was relatively high.

Of 13 patients with ISSNHL and BPPV, 11 showed profound hearing loss. The lateral canal was involved in 11 patients, including 3 who had multi-canal involvement. Ten patients underwent a single repositioning maneuver. Those patients did not display a significant difference in hearing recovery compared with those patients having ISSNHL only.
Our results support the possibility that the mechanism between persistent and transient geotropic DCPN may be different. However, more studies are needed on the pathogenesis and mechanism of the two diseases, including the occurrence of pseudo-spontaneous nystagmus in the disease entity.
