Professor Sukeui Sohn's research focuses on party politics, coalition governance, and electoral strategies in Japan, particularly examining the dynamics between junior coalition partners and dominant parties such as the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). His work explores how parties like Kōmeitō navigate the tension between policy alignment and ideological distinctiveness, especially under the pressures of maintaining core support from religious constituencies like Sōka Gakkai. He investigates institutional mechanisms—such as candidate nomination systems and vote allocation—that enable strategic flexibility in local politics, and analyzes the structural barriers to opposition party unification, including regional party systems, candidate-centered voting, and organizational loyalty.

Between Appeasement and Accommodation: Kōmeitō's Policy Influence under Second Abe Administration
Sukeui Sohn
SJR Q2Journal of East Asian StudiesOA

Abstract This study examines the Kōmeitō's strategies for policy influence within the coalition framework with its coalition partner, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) during the period of Second Abe Administration (2012–2020). As a junior coalition partner, Kōmeitō faces unity–distinctiveness dilemma, where it must accommodate policy demands of the senior partner while appeasing its core support base, Sōka Gakkai. This article argues that the junior partner's strategies for policy influence ar

Sustaining Coalition through Adaptive Electoral Alliance: Kōmeitō’s local adjustment mechanism in electoral cooperation with Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)
Sukeui Sohn
Seoul National University Open Repository (Seoul National University)

This paper attempts to unravel how Japans Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Kōmeitō were able to sustain their coalition partnership over the past two decades despite policy and ideological incompatibilities. This paper argues that it is the mechanism of flexible adaptation installed at local levels that has enabled the Kōmeitō to avoid over-supporting the LDP counterpart and deter risks of cooperating with the senior partner in times of political crises. From the system of candidate recomm
